Plymouth Breakwater Competition Goes National

You may remember my blog a few weeks back about the all new ‘Plymouth Breakwater Competition’. If you didn’t, you can check it out here .

On Sunday 27th of September, the second Breakwater event of 2009 went ahead and it was a huge success. On the day of the event a total of 100 anglers turned out to fish in beautiful sunny conditions, with over 60 anglers on the reserve list. With such a great response from anglers all over the country, event organiser, Graham Tippet, has some great plans for the event over 2010 with a view to making the competition one of the country’s best catch & release specimen competitions.

Plymouth Breakwater

Since the old breakwater competition was stopped many years ago, starting this new competition has been all about gaining the confidence of Plymouth’s new Harbour Master. The breakwater can only be accessed via boat, which makes the Harbour Master the person responsible as to whether this competition can go ahead or not. It gives me great pleasure to announce that because of the success and smooth running of this year’s two day events, 2010 will see Plymouth’s Breakwater enjoyed by more competing anglers - over more events.

Currently the maximum number of anglers allowed to fish the competition is 100, unfortunately at the moment, this will remain the same. However, next year will see an increase in the amount of competitions held over the course of the year and from April 2010, the all new breakwater competition will become a monthly and occasionally bi-monthly competition, tide dependant.  To avoid a huge list of disappointed reserve anglers, each competition can be run over two days, Saturday and Sunday, if needed. What’s more exciting is that some of these regular events will be ‘all night’ competitions. Until now, angling on the breakwater had only been granted on a dawn till dusk basis. Great news for Conger enthusiasts! And finally there is also talk of a sponsor for the event, and some new prize categories, perhaps including biggest conger – watch this space!

2010 looks set to be a huge year for Plymouth and it’s all new breakwater competition, so if you want to avoid disappointment, my suggestion is that you book your places pretty quickly. In the event of over subscriptions, second day Sundays, will be announced at a later date. Each event also has a back up date, just in case the weather hampers play. Here are the confirmed main competition dates for 2010.

Saturday 10th April
Saturday 8th May
Saturday 22nd May (Night fishing comp)
Saturday 19th June
Saturday 3rd July (Night fishing comp)
Saturday 21st August
Saturday 4th September (Night fishing comp)
Saturday 18th September

For those not in the know, Plymouth Breakwater is rarely fished, meaning this mile long concrete platform offers some of the best unpressured fishing in the country. The breakwater also offers some great specimen fishing and this is where this competition gets its motivation from. Big conger, massive mullet, huge wrasse, big bass, rays and flatfish are more than a possibility. Here are September 2009’s results...

1st Rob Yorke - Conger 34lb
2nd Ray Dower - Grey Mullet 5lb 10 oz
3rd Harry Carpenter - Wrasse 5 lb 8oz
4th Darren Montell - Wrasse 4lb 11oz
5th Chris Lynn - Mullet 4lb
6th Rob Bond - Plaice 2lb 8oz

Junior Winners (Prizes kindly supplied by Sea View Tackle and Bait, Plymouth)
1st Robby Batten - Wrasse 4lb 13oz
2nd Alex Williams - Mullet 3lb 5oz
