Yamaha F30A

30hp motors have always been a top seller as they are big enough to comfortably power the average angling dingy with a length typically between 14 and 16-feet, enter the Yamaha F30A.
It’s a 3-cylinder in line 4-stroke motor with a bore and stroke displacement of 65cm x 75mm giving 747cc’s. Its full throttle range is between 5000 and 6000rpm with a prop shaft output of 22.1 kw at 5500rpm. It weighs 86kgs.
The newly introduced 3 carburettor system produces more torque through the middle throttle range, but also adds increased power when working in the higher rev range.
A Micro Computer ECM system is the brain of the engine and controls numerous functions built in to the F30A.
One of these features is PrimeStart Auto-choke which is exclusive to Yamaha and removes the need for a conventional choke. This controls the warming up process of the engine automatically meaning there is no need to rev the engine in neutral for a minute or two after initial starting.
Modern software also works to optimise the ignition timing so that the engine is working to maximum efficiency and power at all times.
You can’t inadvertently start the motor in gear either, as the power supply to the starter motor is isolated unless neutral is selected.
There is also constant monitoring of major functions inside the engine such as oil level, engine overheat and over rev limiters that automatically switch in to lower the engine revs and protect the motor while the fault exists, but still allowing time to get back to shore. Any such faults are also visually and audibly aware to the helmsman.
When it comes to corrosion protection nothing is left to chance. Key areas of the engine are constructed from YDC-30, a unique corrosion resistant aluminium alloy developed by Yamaha to give maximum protection from the elements. An additional zinc coating is used on all non-moving stainless steel parts increasing resistance to galvanic corrosion and acting as an anode back-up.
Many engine components are made from anti-corrosive stainless steel including the drive shafts and prop shafts, steering arms and through tubes.
There is also a series of strategically placed sacrificial anodes designed to ensure that any effects from saltwater corrosion are minimised.
Also featured is a build sequence using a series of tough primer and undercoats, plus acrylic resin coats, oven baked for maximum adhesion and hardness, before a final coat of clear urethane lacquer that produces a hard and resilient final coating with a high gloss finish to all external surfaces.
The engine also carries a fresh water flushing system that allows a garden hose to be directly connected to a front mounted connector on the engine to flush through with freshwater all the engine waterways to remove salt. This can be done without the engine running.
In addition there is a Shallow Water Drive facility that sees the engine kick up out of harms way should it touch ground feature when working in shallow water.
