Guest Blog by Mathew Rickard – The 2012 bass season kicked off well at the end of April with good numbers of fish up to 4lbs coming to the boat, most of which fell to either diving lures or soft plastics. Especially effective were the Hart Absolute Worms and also the Hart Missile 120. Two lures I’ve been extensively testing over the past couple of months.
As May came, things went quiet for a week or so, no birds working and there was no sign of any baitfish either, the area was void of life. As soon as the weather turned for the better, sea temperatures began to rise, baitfish were on the move and turns, gannets and gulls began arriving from everywhere. This could only mean one thing, bass.
So not one to miss an opportunity to catch a few bass the boat was loaded ready for a quick evening session. As we arrived on the scene the sea was an explosion of activity with baitfish on the surface and birds circling. After a couple of hours of frantic sport we boated and released at least 20 bass, probably more (we were a bit busy fishing…not counting), and the frantic sport continued like this on many of the following trips. On some occasions we have boated over 40 fish, we can safely say the fishing is well and truly on song now.
So far I’ve calculated that we have boated in the region of 200 bass in the month with the biggest going 6lb. In addition to bass, we have also tried for other species prevalent in the bay. So far we have had plenty of bream, nothing huge with the best fish going 1 1/2lbs, not the biggest fish but fantastic sport on light tackle in only 15ft of water! In addition to bass and bream, we’ve also taken good numbers of pollock, huss and also sea-trout which was a fantastic surprise!
That’s all for May’s report, next stop…June!
