Iceland - a seabed paved with fish Written by Wayne Thomas The phrase "a fish a cast" is frequently used to convey sessions when the fish are on the feed but it is seldom a true reflection of reality. This was not the case however during my recent foray to Akureyi in Northern Iceland. The trip to test fish venues in advance of next years European Federation of Sea Anglers proved a hectic experience with an abundance of fish from all the marks we tried. Codling and dabs were in abundance with many dabs well in excess of UK specimen weight targets. The final session of the trip was fished from a commercial pier in Akureyi. That was day two of the EFSA Iceland Shore championship. The fourteen competitors landed 284 fish including cod, dab, wolfish, whiting, haddock, coalfish and plaice. Top fish of the trip was undoubtedly Helgi Bergsson’s plaice weighing 3.170 Kilos (a fraction under 7lb) this fish is believed to be a new shore record for Iceland. The two day competition was won by EFSA Iceland Chairman Skarphedinn Asbjornsson , runner up Wayne Thomas and third Phil Lustig EFSA Wales Chairman. A total of 520 fish were landed in the two-day competition by just fourteen anglers. A full account this of trip should appear in a future edition of Total Sea Fishing with a follow up online feature here at WSF.
