I was fortunate to fish the annual Ammo species day match on Colin Penny’s Weymouth based Charter boat Flamer 4. The thirty-nine foot Pro Charter boat provided plenty of space for the ten competitors who managed to land sixteen different species in an exciting day afloat fishing various marks throughout Weymouth Bay.

One of the highlights of the day must have been the capture of nineteen spectacularly coloured red band fish. A species that was new to several of the competitors.

David Bruce secured the top specimen of the day a strikingly marked undulate ray of 15lb. This ray was one of several undulates landed during the day.

Ammodytes Ltd the St Ives based frozen Bait Company founded by Malcolm Gilbert in 1979 sponsored the day providing, dirty squid and mackerel. Present owner Ian Tyldesley was at hand throughout the day to witness the effectiveness of the baits and to present the prizes at the close of play.

Results of the Annual Ammo competition were as follows: -

1st – Andy Collings – 8 species 238 points
2nd – Peter Collings – 10 species 188 points
3rd – Robin Amor – 168 points
