Really a matter of preference. I used to pole fish alot on the local canals, but gave it up when i lost the last three sections one session. Although enjoyable it is expensive. Poles, octopus seat and terminal tackle is not cheap. You can get cheap poles but they tend to be heavy and floppy.
I now stick to a heavy feeder rod which i find i can use as an all rounder ie float fishing or ledgering for carp etc on lakes or ledgering on rivers (which i mainly do), might even try it out as a bass rod this summer using light weights in the surf.

depends on where you're fishing and what size fish you intend to catch, also whether you want to float or ledger, though if a pole suppose it is float.

Im lucky, i have a friend who's really big into his match fishing so he has a few poles, so i can always lend my mates. But i fish on the surface or on the methord feeder, not into all the sit and wait watching a float sorta thing. dont get me wrong, i do sometimes but i just prefere to be active.

I picked up a cheap rod from argos with a float and feeder tip, seen me fine with carp to 15lb also have a 1.75lb tc rod that i use for floater fishing for bigger fish, start with the rod, Poles are good, but you have to decide if your really going to get into it.

pole or rod that is the quistion its all down to size of fish you want to catch a decent pole will take carp over 10 lb with a pole you can fish in the same place all the time every time and with a pole pot loose feed right on top of your hook bait presentation is far more sensative than with a rod you can use a float that takes 2 no16 shot full lengh of the pole try to do that with a rod (no chance) in the right conditions a pole will out fish a rod ever time i used to do a lot af match fishing and a pole was all way first option you said you did not want to spend £600 on a pole for that price you could get both a half decent pole for less tha £350 go for the older model still does the same job there are some good deals out there and that would then leave you £250 for a rod and reel problem solved
