BUMP BUMP BUMP.
Having seen wat the Stour has to offer I'm also thinkrng of going back to coarsr fishin after a lay-off of some 40yrs.
ROds are a bit antique now and the line has rotted on the reels (those that haven't corroded away, that is).
Do the old techniques still hold good or is it all change and done by bank side laptops?
All info will be gladly received
Thanks

In reply to the original thread i believe the fishing is still free however its best to check. Try one of the local tackle shops. I would imagine you still need a rod licence. I havn't fished the town strecth however Grove Ferry and Plucks Gutter can produce fantastic bags of Bream and Roach especially this time of year and some of the Bream are of good size. Pike fishing will also start to show some very big fish from both of the above venues. Hythe Canal is another good bet for the Pike. With regards to techniques the best for the river is an 11ft quiver tip rod an open ended or cage feeder using a paternoster style rig, good quality ground bait and constant feed of maggots little and often is the best. For the Bream its worth using smallish worms tipping them off with a single white or red maggot. Its also worth mentioning the river is tidal and you will find that it fished better when the water flows in a certain direction and then dies off for a while. In all the years i've fished there it seems sweetcorn can kill a swim but this is purely my own opinion and you may find some people swear by it. I hope this helps

Thanks Big Pit Man.
There are no tackle shops in Canterbury any more so I'll check with Ashford Tackle

So I've heard Nick and they will give a better fight than those Pesky Whiting, which it why I am seriously thinking about it.
Isnt there a burnt out mill or something that way which produces well?
I just need to get my head around what I need to buy in the way of end tackle and I'm off.
I take it that 16lb line, 6oz grippers and 4/0 pennels on beach casters is not the best of tackle :cold:
Apart from an occasional sortie to keep my hand in I think I'll leave the beaches for now until Spring through to late Autumn when I intend to give the Bass and Mullet a hard time.
That about the only up-side I can see for my impending retirement!!!!!!!!!!!!!:help:

Canterbury & District Angling Association ( http://www.cdaa.co.uk ) who control the river all the way from above Sturry down to Plucks Gutter no longer issue day tickets, so only members are able to fish Grove Ferry and Pluck's gutter now.
I joined earlier this year (on an OAP ticket), and it's well worth the money :) (They have a club member's forum on the website, where good information can be obtained about any of their waters, including the Stour).
I love fishing with a centrepin and stick-float (and doing a bit of pike-fishing this time of year) and the Stour is ideal for both, changing in nature from a clear shallow chalk-stream above Westbere, to a deeper and more coloured tidal river lower down.
I've also experienced some good stick-float fishing on the free stretches, caught loads of chub, trout and roach, but not yet seen a barbel, and am really ****ed off with the size of some of the chub that simply won't play!

Thanks for your reply.
I'm not a clubby type I'm afraid.
I'm particularly interests in the stretch of water between Sainsburys and Vauxhall Road which I believe to be free.
Can you confirm?
If you wish, PM me any details that you dont want widly publicised

That's one of the spots that I've fished, having been told that the fishing is free (lots of chub along there!) :)
(I've also been told that the town stretches are only free to people with a CT postcode, but don't know how true that is).
Mid Kent claim a stretch at Vauxhall ( http://www.midkentfisheries.co.uk/stourvauxhall.htm ), but I've been told that it's not actually theirs, again I don't know how reliable that information is.
Further downstream CDAA waters start at the fork in the river.

You will need a rod licence to fish any fresh water anywhere in the UK.
These can be bought from any main post office - about £23.00 and this allows for up to 2 rods to be fished.
I can't help you with any advise on lure fishing though.
If youi look back on this thread you will see links to The Canterbury club and Mid Kent Water which both appear to have pike waters.
I'm sure that another forum member will be able to help you.
If not PM me.

I stand to be corrected but probably the only coarse fish that you would fish for with a lure would be Pike, Zander and Perch.
I'm not sure about Zander and Perch around here but Pike definitely.
You could try the dykes arounf Seal Salter and Graveney for free.
As for the Stour for free I believe the free waters stretch from about the Gas Holders you can see from Wincheap Road to the Vauxhall Road Bridge.
You still need a Rod Licence though.
A post from Leon Roskilly and others above will give you links to day permit or club waters.
Happy hunting!

I've targeted and caught plenty of chub on lures, and surprisingly a bream taking a salmo isn't altogether unhead of (and of course trout will readily take a small spinner. There's a run of sea-trout up the Stour and the brown trout can be a nuisance when you are targeting chub)!

You are great.
and thanks for the corrections to my ignorance.
Mind you, although I normally target them in the fly, a brownie nuisance I would be prepared to tolerate:D

I had heard this but couldn't believe they were going to do it. When i was a member it gave us the opportunity to fish the other bank at Grove Ferry but you could still day ticket fish the other side. Is there anywhere left on the Stour for day ticket fishing? Its been a few years since i fished it myself but used to love getting big bags of bream in the deeps by the boats. A real shame that. How much is it to join the club?
Not fished fresh water for a while and living in the Wincheap area we used to fish regular on the Stour.
Get rod licence from postoffice then go to the westgate gardens and start walking upstream. You can fish right up from there until the A2 roadbridge, with only cows for company.
As you leave the westgate gardens you will go under the 1st road bridge , keep walking past footbridge until you get to where you see the river fork around Bingley island.Just after that is 2 deep parts of the river, have had a few nice size pike there as well as bream.
Continue up to the brick railway bridge (we called it 3 arches),as it has 3 arches I guess.Very shallow in area of bridge so keep walking.Between there and pipe bridge(big water pipe over river) are a couple of deep bomb holes.
Wouldnt venture much past the pipe bridge as there is private fishing about 500mtrs after the A2 road bridge and saves an argument, but was always told by the baliff who lived in my road that the private fishing finished at the rear of the old thanington farm,so end of playing field.Used to do alot there as my mates dad had a pig farm where the A2 bridge is now, many a good day fishing and ratting down there..Up until last year would often walk my jack russell down from the A2 into town and often see lads fishing.
Down stream from the westgate there used to be good fishing in the pond after the flood gates at North Lane, then you can go all the way down to Vauxhall bridge then its private again.
The old burnt out barton mill was very good fishing, they have now developed the old mill and have not been down there for a while, but the stream that goes around the old Hooker school playing field was good for grayfish,we used to catch em and sell in the fish shop that used be in broad street, then round to Proctors for 10 No6 and a Texan Bar......

And getting younger every day no doubt.
Further sins of aging begin with forgetting peoples names followed by forgetting to do up the zip followed by forgetting to undo the zip!
But Hey! Who cares as long as we can still go fishin'.
