Flounder can live in rivers but i dont no if its only in the tidal areas? Ive caught them in the bristol docks where there are alot of normal freshwater species.

Can catch Flounder @ Ulleskelf, just below Tadcaster, which is a good 50 / 60 miles inland of the river Humber.

lets not forget the mullet . common eels , and I know the Hampshire Avon around Christchurch can provide a right mix of species with roach etc being caught along side several different types of sea fish. The Baltic sea is home to pike and perch as well as herring and other sea fish.

I have caught flounder 20 to 25 miles and 2 or 3 locks up the river Bann from the sea.
Apparently they are also caught regularly on commercial eel lines in Lough neagh.

they must have flown . the salmon have enought bother getting through the cutts and cairnroe dont know how a flounder would manage it :/ . iv seen mullet bass and flounder caught right up to the cutts but never anything above it . roach and bream have been caught below the cutts but they seem to die when they reach the very salty water as after a storm or big flood they wash up on portstewart strand dead.

the answer is fresh water and sea fish can live in brackish water but sea fish cannot live in fresh water. the baltic sea is a strance place . the fish have evolved and the pike and perch have adapted to the salt water .

salmon trout and eels have some form of anti osmosis system that allows them to be able to make the switch between the 2 waters

I believe that salt water is more dense than fresh so a cross section through the river would show the water most saline at the bottom and freshest nearer the surface thus there are circumstances where fresh and salt species can inhabit the 'same' section of river
