Nice fish there. One of my objectives is year is learn how to fly fish. Have been studying some useful DVDs over the winter, so may have a go with a fly in the next couple of weeks in one of my local club's ponds.
What sort of fly were you using for these fish? The rainbows in our waters are usually only 0.6 kg or so, but presumably you need to match the fly to what the trout are eating.
The water is a bit cold, so I would think the aquatic insect life would be limited, apart from nymphs, which may live there for 2 years before emerging into dragon flies, etc.
Presumably you are using wet flies?
Thanks

steinbeiser hi mate try using some darker lures this time of year, on an intermediate line. something with a marabou feather in it would be great !!! (black tadpoll, viva,or damsel fly) fish them using the figure of eight style of retrieve.
if the weather is windy cast across the wind and windlanes, using a bushy well hackled bibio, type fly.again use a figure of eight retrieve and a floating line, so that the fly will create a small twitching wake.this type of fishing can be fast and furious at times so watch out for those unexpected takes.try to let the wind create a natural bow in the line and expect the fish to take the fly even right under your rod tip!!!!
befor recasting always hang the the fly's in the water for a few seconds beforhand.
hope this is of some help to you pm me for as much info as you need rockhoppa:fishing::thumbs:

Thanks for the advice.
I will look at trying some of these things.
Lately the weather has been a bit foul with strong winds and near horizontal rain so didn't attempt fly fishing. Cheers again.

Steinbesser,
Failing the 'hairy lure' approach, buzzers still work well in the winter, as do bloodworms, which I used at Christmas, (through a space in the ice) and caught a couple!
The most exciting aspect of fly-fishing is the dry fly, which you'll be able to do soon, once the weather warms up, (though I did take a brown trout in Kent a few weeks ago on a dry - see attached). You can't beat seeing your quarry going for your fly!
