View Full Version : Anthony Pearson
Anthony Pearson wrote a couple of my favorite sea-fishing books namely; Succesful Shore Fishing in 1967and Sea Fishing - North Wales and Anglesey in 1968, copies of which I possess and still read regularly. As a professional journalist, working for The Guardian, he was an excellent writer with a wonderfully descriptive and engaging style. Does anyone know "what happened to him - is he still alive - did he go abroad " etc. I would be most interested to hear anything about his life.
Cheers.

Anthony Pearson was a great favourite of Mike Thrussell senior who knows a bit about him.
He was also local to me at one time when he worked on the Hull Daily Mail hence the chapter on fishing at Kilnsea on the Holderness Coast in "Successful Sea Angling".
It would have been very interesting to meet him as I have fished many of the same places as he did.
He wrote two other books which might be of interest "Fishing" 1969 and "Fisherman" 1970.

Cheers Phil, Yes, I am aware of the other two works you mention, but have not read them. Would be great if MT Snr were to post some information.

His book about (mainly) fishing off the Kenyan coast is great stuff.
If you like his style, you will very probably enjoy the "scribblings" of Roddy Hays (you can find a link to them at www.legendlures.com ) they cover some things like using a kite for shore fishing in Alderney, as well as his big game fishing experiences. He pens a "mean" word - great fun !
I too greatly enjoyed Sucessful Shore Fishing when it first came out, it was, and is still, a wonderfully inspirational read
I have recently read somewhere though that Mr Pearson tended to employ a bit of journalistic licence when it came to the factual content of his writing :g:
But, even if thats so, that dosent distract from it being a true classic. After all, anglers are allowed a bit of latitude when it comes to recalling their exploits ;)

:laugh::laugh: "Fly Fishing" by J.R. Hartley is my favourite fishing book. I'd be most interested to know if the famous Mr. Hatley is still alive.:whistling:whistling:whistling

I think it was somewhere on the B.A.S.S. website.

He's dead.
He's dead.
It would be helpful if you could expand your somewhat blunt and brusque comment a bit please.
Do you have any other factual information about Mr Pearson's life and death, if so I would be interested to hear.

Apologies... couldn't resist. I have a friend who knew him: I'll see what I can find out.

:)Thanks very much, it has intrigued me for many years "what happened to him".
Cheers.
Hi Limanda,
Last i heard was that he died of a brain tumor in a London hospital in the 90's. Maybe someone can confirm this.

Hi Diabolos,
Just wondered if you managed to find out anything more about Anthony Pearson ?
Cheers.

Its bad, but his reply did make me laugh. Terrible I know.
Yes, love his books, been after a sea fishing in the north west for ages. Ive got the north wales one which is great to read and there is something faintly mystical about visiting the marks you knew he had visited all those years ago (no spoilers please - if you tell me he got all the info from google i wont be happy - ignorance is bliss!)
Think i'd rather not know any more about his life and death and just enjoy his books. Now i'll just remember he died of a brain tumour :(

Sea Fishing in the North West, published in 1973 was written by Bob Gledhill (another "blast from the past" !), who like myself was from Blackpool - wonder what happened to him !! (An earlier topic about Bob was not very informative).
Regarding Anthony Pearson, just wondered if he kept on fishing in the years between the early 70's, when he appears to have ceased writing and his (reported) death in the 90's. Did he go abroad, as someone once told me ?
Cheers.

Ahh sorry, yea, my mistake.
But yes, more about his life please - would be very interesting.
What a job, being paid to go angling around North Wales.

"Fly Fishing" by Nina Hartley would have been my favourite film, but she did not make it.
I too enjoyed and still refer to his books. As regards the journalistic license, I did notice he used the same photo in two books, in one it was a Lleyn Peninsular storm beach, in the other it was in Ireland. Still, a good and informative read.

Do you know which location was the correct one ?

Both of the pictures are in "Successful Shore Fishing" opposite pages 97 & 128. The are taken at Dinas Dinlle near Caernarfon but one is described as surf fishing in south Pembrokeshire. The picture in the book "Fishing" opposite page 49 is described as North Wales but is actually Brandon Bay in Ireland probably Kilcummin.

Thanks for that - I have never spotted that one !
I have also noticed that the same picture is used (second plate afer page 64) in Sea Fishing North Wales and Anglesey (titled Lleyn Peninsula) and (opposite page 161) in in Succesful Shore Fishing (titled West Kerry), I wonder which of those two is the correct location ?
Cheers.
That's the one I had spotted, Limanda - doesn't look like Pen Llyn to me.

There are only two beaches on the LLeyn I can think of where the tide goes out any distance which are Hell's Mouth or Porth Neigwl and Dinas Dinlle. I can't quite picture the view looking along Hell's Mouth but my guess on the picture mentioned is that it is Brandon Bay. The twin peaks look like those at the back of Fermoyle beach. It's probably taken from Kilcummin again.

Anthony Pearson...........Legend!
The bloke who inspired me to fish for bass from an early age.
As for journalistic license, do you think he really got that tope on a toby spinner from the shore:whistling??
