Question to those already Yak fishing :

What length rod is best ?

I have done some float tube fly fishing and I am expecting to get a similar experiance from the Yak, with a tube a 10ft rod is ideal, but you must ensure the leader is not to long ( on boat fly fishing 15 - 20 foot leader is normal ) otherwise you will never land your fish, I am planning on the same length rod for the Yak, same rule applied.

I have seen some comments on very small rods being used, but again the length of rod, plus arm length is max leader length minus safety margin ( ie fish pulling will reduce your height above water and you don't want to be stretched when trying to net a fish )

I use 10ft rods at present (for the last 2.5 years). I have some 7ft rods coming soon though. Neither will give any problems. I do cut my butts down though as the seating position and gunwhales can make things awkward with a lot of standard rods.

I usa a 6ft and a 6'6inch rod. I'm going to try a handline too this year. I've made one up ready. I have a net, but never catch anything big enough to use !

6-7ft, just make sure you can get the tip around the front and back of the yak and a butt length so the end is around your elbow when holding, any longer and it will keep banging on your thighs, knees and the side of the yak.
euroboat do cheap little rods, 6'6", I use a 6lb but they come in 12lb and maybe 20lb.
Remember theres always the danger of damage when launching/retrieving so you risk what you pay for.

Cheers,
Chaz
