Go for those dates mcdad, if the tides are good I'll be there.

Start a new thread when you are ready and I'll sticky it in the meets for you.

Perhaps we could get some grub organised this time....rather than fat boy burgers. :D

Discussed the grub aspect with McMum, and our thoughts are that we could do a BBQ and/or Buffet (Chinese dishes a speciality,) around 18.30/19.00 probably at home here (we stay les than 1.5 miles from the beach, on the way to Peterhead) or at the beach. If it is wet we can utilise a large shed at the Farm.

Having given Milkman's post some thought, there would be no intention on our part to charge members for the BBQ or Buffet :icecream::icecream: . As is customery with meets, though, it would not be a bad idea to support a worthy cause, which you, the forum members may comment on. As circumstances change over time, I think any cause for donation should be decided nearer the time of the event, rather than at the moment.
Should members feel obliged to contribute to the BBQ or Buffet, as a seperate consideration, then all I can suggest is an "Honesty" box, the proceeds of which will be decided later.

Lets not dwell on costs, or money at the moment, and just come and enjoy a meet, and a great day's fishing with the chance to land a Scottish record. :fishing1::fishing1::fishing1:I noticed that Millser's personal best Turbot is 5lb 2 oz, :notworthy:notworthy:notworthyand I imagine, possibly wrongly, that it came from this area!! Maybe he will correct me.

That's a very generous and magnanimous offer you've made there, mcdad! If this is how you wish to go, then I fully support your suggestion of an 'Honesty Box', the proceeds of which could go to a good (possibly local?) cause. :thumbs:

In your case, I'm sure a quad bike would allow you to attend the meet. I think I know the land owners for you to get permission for you to be allowed there, and therefore I don't think the Police would bother you. Can u get a loan of a quad?

boddam-liner
01-03-2008, 20:34
Would be cool if it works out :thumbs:, since i don't fish beaches much unless theres a pier.
Did speak to someone from the :busted_co force for the feb meet got told the dunes at the beach where protected and i would need written permission from police to drive over them, never said nothing about landowners or the beach itself.
Good idea a little quad just for beach fishing with a bit off pipe as rod rest can sit, bait up and cast, u'r getting me going now..:headhurt:
If you'r right i'll be there, prob nothing else better to do (hospital and such like).
Will keep you posted.
Role on June first real beach fish..:fishing:.

P.S.
tight-liner says he should be able to get a shot off a quad for me, will try and get it sorted out...:yeah:

Sounds like a great idea folks, pity it's 400 miles awa'! My family are originally from "up there somewhere"!

Just remember to be careful with bait size/presentation & hook size - they might have titchy eyes but they're canny fish, especially the bigger ones. There's definitely a knack to it!

Here I use a 2-hook flapper with size 1 Viking hooks: mackerel fillet (has to be in top nick) hooked just once through root of tail - tough skin, and cast gently into a flooding tide just 20-30 yds out - and vitally the surf conditions are critical - you want an onshore 3-4 chop with next to no ground-swell. Mike T Snr's article is very good but I'd add they are gettable in daylight too if conditions are just right. One notch off and it becomes very hard work! Wrong conditions and you will struggle day or night, simple as that. A big swell and forget it.

Never be scared of big baits - if you catch a 5-pounder and check out its gob you'll see why!

Down here we get just a few opportunities each year, and have to head out at short notice, but we manage a few each season in the 4-6lb range on those rare occasions.

Good luck! Cheers - John

"Access Legislation
The access legislation in Part One of the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003 aims to make it easier for people to enjoy the outdoors and to be clear about what they can and cannot do."
http://www.outdooraccess-scotland.com/default.asp?nPageID=257&nSubContentID=0

According to my understanding of this legislation, as a disabled person, Boddam-liner, for example, would have legal permission to access the beach, on a machine "adapted for his use."
This suggests that a suitably equiped quad would fall in line with legislation, and be allowed on the beach.:clap2::clap2:

Don't understand this bit????
Chapter 1
Access rights, reciprocal obligations and other rules and rights
Paragraph 5
Part (4) The existence or exercise of access rights does not diminish or displace any public rights under the guardianship of the Crown in relation to the foreshore.

Think I Get this bit....
Chapter 2
Paragraph 9 Conduct excluded from access rights
The conduct which is within this section is—

(a) being on or crossing land in breach of an interdict or other order of a court;

(b) being on or crossing land for the purpose of doing anything which is an offence or a breach of an interdict or other order of a court;

(c) hunting, shooting or fishing;

(d) being on or crossing land while responsible for a dog or other animal which is not under proper control;

(e) being on or crossing land for the purpose of taking away, for commercial purposes or for profit, anything in or on the land;

(f) being on or crossing land in or with a motorised vehicle or vessel (other than a vehicle or vessel which has been constructed or adapted for use by a person who has a disability and which is being used by such a person);

(g) being, for any of the purposes set out in section 1(3) above, on land which is a golf course

Yeap McDad looks like you could b right apart from the fishing part could use a quad to drive down the beach, as in going for a walk but can't use it for fishing????:offtopic:????? as it is excluded from the Access Code :mad:

The fishing reference in the code is related to privately owned fishing. It means that the code does not allow fishing as a right. As sea fishing, (but not for game fish) is a right, and is freely available, then the result of your access to the beach, is allowed.

As far as the council is concerned, this is the information on Quad use on the buchan coast.

Thought I would give you some directions to the place.

Coming North from Aberdeen, at Peterhead, you take the Bypass road to St Fergus (After stopping at the Big Macs for your breakie) you cross two roundabouts and get to a T Junction at the Waterside Hotel. You take a Left, go over a bridge, then past My hoose (with the yukky coloured garages, and a big tall 90ft green grass tower), where the BBQ will be, and my in-laws equestrian centre. About a mile past the equestrian Centre you come to a sign to St. Fergus Cementry.
http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x278/discododtco/signpostfeb20082008_0220004.jpg

Coming South from Fraserburgh you take the main peterhead road. About 2miles past St Fergus you meet the same sign pointing to the left. (Should you wish to fish the Scotstoun Beach, as opposed to Kirkton Beach) the road down to it is the last road on your left as you exit St Fergus)

When you go down the bumpy road to the Cemetery, you come to a fork. To take the left road there leads you to the nearest to the beach (50 - 60 yards) car park, but it is a rough road so if your ground clearance is low, then it is not advised (No stones on it to tear your sump off though) Most of the locals go there!
I've marked the car parks on the map.

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x278/discododtco/Beach.jpg

If you take the right fork, you will reach the Cemetery car park. There is a half mile walk to the beach from that.

Hi Guys,

I hope to attend the meet on saturday, all being well.

Can someone clarify where exactly we'll be fishing as I don't know the area and believe that the beach is huge. Is it the section of beach between Scotstown head and Kirkton Head?

Looking forward to meeting you all there.

Hi Guys,

I hope to attend the meet on saturday, all being well.

Can someone clarify where exactly we'll be fishing as I don't know the area and believe that the beach is huge. Is it the section of beach between Scotstown head and Kirkton Head?

Looking forward to meeting you all there.

regards

Iain.

Aye Iain that's where it is. Turn down of the A90 for the cemetery and at bottom of road either go left or right for parking.

Cracking pictures Keith, as you say the beaches look absolutely gorgeous. I can't wait till saturday, hope the weather holds out and that it's not too windy.

Judging by your first photo you appear to be standing in a bit of water, are wellies or waders required?

Iain

Iain

That ain't me, Iain - that's Paul (tommytwists)! I would take up slightly more of the beach than him!

Between the high winds and the rushing water, he wasn't having a good day!

Wellies are a must IMHO, but although I'm no expert on the area, waders would be unnecessary. When I was there last, the wind fairly drove the water onto the beach - and quickly, I might add! As you'll only be lobbing your bait a max of 40 yds or so, the wellies'll do to keep your feet dry. :thumbs:

Short précis of the days events - 16 anglers and about 28 fish caught in total (may be more). I had a flounder and a turbot. Briser had a wee turbot and Pondlife picked up the best double shot of the day. Best fish was about 1 1/4lb - 1 1/2lb.

Had both my fish on 1/0 circle hooks. The dvice which was the other rod with 1/0 aberdeen's was fishless for the day :( but the dvice was working better than last time I tried one, only one premature ejaculation, so to speak, and one non ejection on a double pulley rig, as shown on the dvice site :thumbs:
