View Full Version : rig u like
just wonderd what rigs you guys use to catch your big carp or do the rigs only catch you ??keeping things simple is the way to hammer the bigger fish in most lakes the trick to have a few nice fish is to use a good bait along with good location and a simple rig like the swivel rig it has acounted for nearly all the lumps that i have caught over the years out fishing eny other rig that has been invented i used it in africa and had 30 thirtys in one session along with seven 40s to 48lb and as iwas packing up to move to another dam i had a 51lb mirror all fellto the swivell rig with poped up tigers the best bait ie boilies i have used and that have acounted fot over 150 thirtys from france holland belgium and england along with 69 fortys to date were all suplied by maineline bait i used to be a tester for them when they first started out and i fished some of the hardest waters in the south of england as well as some very famouse lakes in europe before they were apeared in all the top carp mags and by useing the said rig along with mainline baits i had a good time and out fished most of the other anglers on the lakes cannals and rivers i have hardly fished for carp since 1999 a bad motorbike acident has seen my health take a turn for the worce i just do the odd trip to one of my mates lakes in france which is full of big mirrors and a few very large commons i have put a few fish pictures of fish on here 48lb common being one of them along with a few 40s will have to scan the fish i had in africa thes fish were pink mirrors most of them were over 30 years old the 51mirror was the south african record but when i caught it it had lost 6lb since it had become the record i once had a 35lb mirror called gut bucket from manor farm lake in essex in the morning then caught it again that arfternoon got some nic film of a 47lb mirror caught in france being let go and it just swam a few feet then started to eat all the old boilies that had been frown in front of the swim when changeing baits and again thes fish fell to the swivell rig hook lenghth has allways been 6to10 inches did take a few fish on 3inch hook lengths bolt riged to round3oz leads boy did they rip off mental takes most screwed up rig ive ever seen used and this rig damaged a lot of good fishes mouths was the bent hook rig while fishing darenth i saw a lot of fishes mouths ripped and big chunks of flesh torn out still you live an lern the swivel rig is easy to make just slide the smallest swivell you can get on to the hook your useing at the time then make your hair by fixing one of them round bait bands put a bit of silocone tubeing just past the barb so as the swivell dosent mask the barb for a greedy pig rig puy two bands together and away you go baits will spin when the fish sucks at them plus it drops nice in the fishes mouth when it tryes to eject the rig i no thet this rig has been about a while but if you have not tried it you dont know what you have bin missing but dont forget use maineline baits you only have to look at how meny very big fish have been caught not just once but meny times on the same mainline boilies well this is the end of my little help you to catch bigger carp thread so good luck and tight line buetrate

Quite an interesting post concidering I have steered well clear of Course angling aprt from a session with some students at a coaching Course.
The comment "or do the rigs only catch you" was the main bit that grabbed my attention, and after talking to another Coach in the Midlands, we had some made up (hair rigs) using both Braid and Fluoro and are having them trialed locally, so I can see what happens, and further up Country.
Just out of interest what exactly would you say would make a good commercial rig for Carp?
because if we go ok with the trial gear, moonfleet will certainly make them but as with the sea gear they will not be "Budget" and not be lower end market gear.
And before anyone jumps on my head, I openly say that people should make their own gear, and it is a serious question.

i don't fish commercial waters for oversized fish, but do target river carp and barbel.nowadays i always use a running ledger using a ledger or feeder.hook lengths vary between 8 and 15 inches and on the pointy end is usually a size 6 or 8 hook, which is usually carrying a hair rigged halibut pellet or a few short sections of lobworm.do get eels and some small stuff take the worm, but the better fish are also more inclined to take the worm as well.trout and halibut pellets are fed a lot into the river,so the fish are familiar with these.some do use boilies, but this seems a very hit or miss approach and feel they are of not much use on the river, yes they can catch, but you can catch more with a different bait.found the best way to attract the river carp, though decent bream and barbel like this as well,is to use silver-x groundbait mixed with sweetcorn, molasses, trout and mixed halibut pellets:fish:
hi the only rig i contemplate using is the tim paisley combi rig with bristle filiament and long shank nailors with pop ups the best rig IMHO..i have caught loads on this rig they cannot get rid of it when its taken..simply brillient..cheers andy
ive always just used a running rig with a nash saftey clip, i agree with captain in just keeping it simple. id spend more time walking round studying the lake rather than messing about making flash rigs.
hi i think your missing out of takes as tim paisley puts it ..the carp pick up baits far more than you realise what are them odd bleeps you get out of the blue wind.. current ... line bites... or CARP i have a pond and the my fish will pick something up and spit it out quicker than greased lighting you standard rigs will be ejected as quickly as that....... anti eject rigs ARE the way forward ..study tim paisleys and terry hearns writings and videos..these two are masterminds when it comes to catching carp..look at there results standard rigs are not for these two so whos to say there wrong .. cheers andy

they are nearly as good as me them 2 but ill give em the benefit of the doubt lol ive not ever fished a mega hard water as i never fancied it, wasnt my cup of tea. the lakes i fish on the rigs i mention work very well, in fact the proper carpers down there swear by it (at least thats what they tell me ) i dont doubt these other rigs are good, even better but as i said i just keep it simple and thats been working for me with all my fishing, carp, pike, match, and sea angling. its what you feel most comfortable with init

hi well maybe so.. but surely if you dont try do different try various tatics ,new rigs etc how do you know that your angling will not improve ... if your happy with what you do then im not saying your wrong but to standarise yourself with one set way of fishing is not allways a good thing read any carp book ,mag or film and you will see that there are so many more elements to carping than the same old rig..cheers andy

I mainly use 15lb big game main to a 25lb snakeskin hook length, rig is normally a semi fixed bolt with a heavy tube for fish protection and to keep the rig pinned, with either running backleads/ backleads under the rod tips or both together.
Sometimes I use the same rig but with an inline method feeder.
I may use rig putty for weight and/or disguise or even camo shot lol.
Thats my cat rig but I do pick up a lot of carp on it.
When I do aim for carp it's normally surface fishing, 10lb mainline to an 8lb double strength hooklength or simular.
If i'm using a controller then i'll connect the lines via a size 8 swivel and cover it with a bit of rig tubing, I'll then pinch the tubing so that the eye of the float can slip over it and trap the controller, during a take the float will pop off the bit of tube so that is the line does break the float can slide free.
Anybody remember anchor rigs, they had the lil bit of plastic above the hook that would spin the hook if it moved?
