Hello fellow members!!

Any ideas what this little critter is?? I think its possibly some kind of sea sponge. Took the photo today as the tide was going out. I've seen a fair few of them by the end of a rocky feature near a pier where I Live in Herne Bay kent.

Looks like a mangled orange!

This is just a WAG (wild arsed guess). It looks like a decomposed kelp stalk attachment (the thick bit that sticks onto a rock).

Yup. that's what I was thinking, a decomposing kelp fasthold (though sargeants brain sounds good :) )

IMHO it cannot be a sergeants brain as it does look well used!!!!

try sending the picture to the sea life centre or an aquarium. We've done this with spiders at work (paignton zoo though as the sea life centre didn't have a black widow expert when I last checked!). they're normally very helpful when it comes to identifying critters. :-)

Could quite easily have come off a shallow wreck offshore, or a shallow reef some distance away as it looks like it has been rolled about a fair bit by the tide

It looks much like a discarded lump of expanding foam - the sort used to plug holes etc. Colour certainly matches.

Did you touvh it? what did it feel like?

Sponge.

There were a few bits of it about and I have seen it there before on several occasions??? Going to go down there again soon to see if I can find some more. Im also going to send the pics to a sea life centre or such.

Looks to me like a sea sponge. They're common enough on the southern coasts but usually a lot smaller than that and the 'vent holes' are usually a bit more visible. Colour's right.

Like I said, it does resemble one of Vic's 'Duke of Argyles'

It is a kelp foot or root.
Well done once again Davy :)
