Anything that ends up with a sharp, baited hook. If the cod are peckish they won't bother.

I'd love to help, but then I'd only be accused of repeating the same old thing time and time again!
At the risk of upsetting those of you who don't like reading the same things all the time; you won't go far wrong with a pulley pennel from the shore or a running leger incorporating a pennel from the boat.
Hope this helps.

like dave said from the shore id go for a pully rig on its own or pennel style. ive actually started useing 2 hook clipped down size 1/0 hooks and had some succsess with it, maybe the extra bait and scent helps aswell.
Have to agree the pulley pennel is the best all round cod rig in my book.
Add a rotten bottom clip to the link for rough ground work and it improves the chances of retrieving a fish and cuts the losses down.
The running ledger has its day too...

Dave you've upset me I have only had 1500 cod from the shore all on paternosters where am I going wrong? Should I be using a pulley rig?
Regards,
Phil
I use mainly an up and over pennal with about a 3 foot snood. It works in Kent on clean beaches. Have also had pretty good success with a basic 2 hook paternoster. I guess if the cod are about, they will take anything that happens to be in the way..

you could also use a loop rig with 3/0 hooks and use 30lb hook length allows the bottom hook to fish hard on the bottom.

I'm with Phil on this one - I just don't get the fascination with pulley rigs. Fair enough if you are fishing onto rough ground, and maybe fishing for Rays', but I caught plenty of cod as a young 'un and saw plenty more caught on a simple one hook paternoster - why overcomplicate matters?
What is to stop the bait & weight wrapping round each other on a pulley rig if their only going through a swivel? Or am I missing something?

the pulley rig is simpler that a 1 hook paternoster, it's basically the same rig minus 2 crimps, and on the pulley you attach the snood to the top swivel, on the paternoster you put it on the other :showoff:

I don't think you could find a simpler rig than the rough ground rig we use here in the East Neuk of Fife.Tie your mainline to a swivel, tie your weight to the bottom eye of the same swivel on about 24 to 30 inches of line, and tie your 8 to 14 inch snood to the top eye of the swivel beside the mainline and that's it.Considering you often lose up to 10 traces per rod for each session, there's no point getting complicated.
a clipped down pulley pennel with bait impact shields would be my choice. hook sizes would be a strong 1/0 for codling up to 3lb but for proper 4lb + cod it would be a 3/0 viking.

i dont think he said that a pulley was the only rig  i could name a dozen different cod rigs that work from the shore but all to suit differing conditions.

It was a little joke just to make the point that you have made. There's more than just the pulley rig. For many years anglers have been catching cod for very successfully on paternoster rigs.
Geordie beach cod rig
60- 80lb clear body, 6 oz gripper,Two hooks flapping one up/one down rig with 3/0 or 4/0s on two long hooklengths of 36inches. The bottom hook length 12 inches above sinker so the lower hooklength is trailing well below the sinker.
Arm with 2 yellow tails and fresh or frozen crab or whiteworm on each hook.
Alternatively clipped down pennel with 2/0 to 4/0 hooks again with a 36 inch hooklength. Fresh crab or a black tipped off with half a snake white.
A pal of mine often uses up to 5ft hooklengths when the fish get finicky ie stuffed full of food. he catches more cod than most.
