Was wondering where to fish for Pike in Scotland, what technique to use, tackle, bait, hooking procedures for bait etc?

Hi Waal, Without a doubt and probably closest to you would be Loch Lomond, I tried only the once there while on one of the campsites, no pike but good size ferox trout on makkie, waders advisable to reach the deep water but watch out for the steep drop offs, tackle was just a running ledger and a pike, steel wire trace with trebles. I would love to spend a week there fishing,,,,,,,,

Pretty much any loch in Scotland will hold atleast a small head of pike, Ask in your tackle shop I'm sure there will be somewhere local. As stated fish a ledger or a dart style float, using joey mackerel, roach, smelt, trout, lamphrey, herring, bluey, sprat etc on a wire pike trace with treble hooks, If your not used to making them I'd buy a few and use them as a template to make your own (much cheeper that way!) or you can spin for them with just about any lure, again with a wire trace. Learn to read the water, look for likely spots - edge of reed beds, overhanging banks, shady areas, shelving drop offs etc, if you see fish activity (rises, bubbles etc) the Pike won't be far away.

A point to think about - If you're going to fish for pike, when you do catch them you have to be able to handle them confidently and safely, they look fierce but if you carefully slide your fingers up inside the gill cover ( a sturdy glove helps for this part!) and push down on the inside of the fish's lower jaw they will release and won't be able to close again until you let go, the fish also will stop writhing and seems to just let you get the hooks out. Always use forceps and if you get a deep hooked fish use pliers to cut out as much of the hooks and trace as you can before returning. Better still go pike fishing with someone who knows what to do and learn properly how to handle fish!

My apologies if that seems like a bit of a rant, just seen 1 too many idiots pussy footing around the job of unhooking a pike causing the fish stress, keeping it out the water too long, which will inevitabley kill the fish.

It's a helluva long way away from you but Mill Loch at Lochmaben, Dumfriesshire holds some excellent pike.The top baits over the years have been whole joey mackerel, herring, lamprey and eel sections. Also the pike in Castle Loch in the same village has a good head of pike, although it is better known for it's record breaking bream Castle Loch costs £6 for 2 rods(I think) and Mill Loch is free. There is another one in Lochmaben, of which the name escapes me, where there is a caravan and camping park. It also has a good head of big pike.
BUGGER !!!!! I'll be up all night now trying to remember the name of that bloody loch.:huh::huh:

lock ken is fishing very well at the moment, lots of crayfish but if you pop your baits up they wont bother you, ps its worth a trip just to see the red kites

theres no pike in loch quien on the isle of bute and theres also roach in loch ascog. i bailiff loch ascog and you need to have all the proper equipment to fish it ie unhooking mat landing net bank sticks forceps etc. my best bit of info about piking is if you've never done it then find someone who has to take you. as for loch lomond i think thatv is a shadow of what it used to be due to the seals targetting the pike. dont bother with there anymore.

I used to catch them right at my back garden on the canal that runs into Bowling not sure where it starts from but it goes through Clydebank Maryhill and further, My biggest was 16lb my dad about the same biggest I seen caught was 22lb,
Loch lomond my mate got 1 at 32lb and won the fish of the week in the paper, he also got an 11lb trout there whilst fishing for pike:)
