HI MATE,

Not sure about what sort of fishery Gowerton is , but assuming its a match style fishery with a few lumps,
1) i would buy a bag of method groundbait. Any decent grountbait sensas, van den eyde ect.
2) Add a handfull of small pellet
2) Add a handfull of maggots
3) Add a small handfull of corn
4) Add a small handfull of hemp

Adjust handfull sizes according to water temperature - the rule being the colder the weather the smaller the handfull, and vice versa. Plus stick to fishery rules.:busted_co

Fish semifixed and inline
four inch hooklink (ish)

Ensure at least 8lb mainline
With a 6lb hooklink
On a heavy feeder rod/light carp

Hookbait wise use a simple knotless knot hooklink
corn= 2 grains on a size 10
Pellet= 14mm drilled pellet size 10-8

Maggot, do not use knotless knot attach maggots straight to hook, use 3 maybe four on hook however lots of maggots on a hook looks too blatent.

Mix groundbait by adding water little and often the night before. Do not add maggots untill just before fishing they will crawl everywhere.

Ask the baliff the best swims at the mo (very important)

Aim to cast every 10 mins for an hour or so to get some bait out.
be accurate.

Do not strike twitchy bites - you get lots of false bites as fish attack feeder. Sit on your hands - engage baitrunner or light clutch - wait for rod to wrap round, trust me you know proper bites when you see them.

Be patient at this time of year fish are still cold and it may take three or so hours to get them actively rooting about.

Plus if that doesnt work switch to maggot feeder, cast more often and put up with small fish. Carp love maggots, its still fairly early in the year for the method.

Good luck.

OH and dont make your groundbait to wet it should be light and fluffy and only just stcks to feeder, when i was a baliff the number of people i saw bringing the method back in after an hour or so with a big doughy ball still attached was incredible. Better to add water throughout the day than to make your mix too wet and mess things up at the start.

If not too late, i only post at work. Try pellets and boilies. Personally i would use small pellets if using boilies use small 10mm ones.

Hiya,

You do not mention the size of the carp in this fishery mate.....

Whilst Tagmans explaination is spot on for venues stuffed with big carp,(Talking 10 lb +),for smaller fish,(ok,a few munters as well),I use this........

For small F1/Stockie Carp,I use a small Korum In-line mathod feeder....

These are spoonshaped, with the lead under the body, meaning the bait/groundbait,always lands upright.

I make a 12" loop in the line,(6lb-8lb size of fish depending),and thread the feeder up it......this does two things...

1, Makes it more durable for the feeder to run up and down on.

2,Makes the rig semi bolt, with the safety of the rig being allowed to fall apart should your line part, which means the fish isn't towing a full method rig around....

I then tie on a Drennan swivel stop,to stop it all falling through to the hook.

I use a 4" hooklink,of 5lb mono,with a size 18 Kamasan B911 for 2 dead red maggots,or a size 16 B911 eyed,for hair rigged meat/corn/pellet.

For slightly bigger carp,I just use a bigger feeder.......everything else stays the same........

My groundbait,is a 50/50 mix of Fishmeal,and brown crumb.....

I mix it all up the night before, and for a 2 kilo ammount of groundbait,I add 2 pints of water.........

Mix it well, and keep fluffing it up whilst the water is absorbed, then after 15 minutes, tip it all into a black bag, secure, and chuck it in the fridge overnight.........

This makes the mix inert, meaning it wont waft about, but will still breakdown quickly.

When you get to your peg,tip it out into a big bowl/bucket,give it another vigourous mix,to break any lumps up,(quite quickly really),and cover with a damp towel,to stop it drying out......

Keep your casting accurate, and recast every few minutes,to get them going....

Once you start getting bites/fish,make the casts every 5 minutes,to give the fish chance of finding your bait.

Good luck,and hope this helps...

Si.

I should think a segment on the hook would work as well as 2 dead reds...

I suppose it's what you feel confident with at the end of the day....

not a fan of boilies, but gave worms and halibut pellets a test on the river last year.carp preferred worms, barbel preferred worms and bream went almost exclusively on worms.this is a river where pellets and boilies are used a lot, tbh,as the season progressed, the worm catches improved until the pellets were hardly touched

In the early 90's,I made my own boilies with a certain degree of success.....

But like most baits, fish soon wise up to them, making it harder to catch, whereas most natural baits will do a full circle and keep on catching.....

I don't do much River work anymore, mores the pity, and on the odd time I have been, big pellets did nothing........

I am hoping to fit a couple of sessions in next season,in between my match commitments, giving the Pellet/boilie a fair go.....

On my local river wensum and the carp style of fishing i do, pellets even 21mm's = bream
boilies = less bream and more carp
worms = perch, perch and perch with a few chublets.
Basically to be selective and to ensure that you are'nt up all night landing 3-4lb bream or 4oz stripies boilies work for me.

However during the day you really will not beat stalking carp with breadflake, its a killer every season.

I also put a least 50kg of vitalin in two weeks before the season, not only is it highly edible (to the fish that is) its great for clearing patches in the weed, and if your subtle about baiting no-one else will fish your swim/patch all season.

However my two target fish still elude me.

The joys of fishing
