fishing in denmark

hi folks been to denmark twice now but not had the chance to do much fishing does any body know what the salt water fishing is like there in the winter .
i know of a charter boat that runs not far from where i will be staying,hopefully i will be able to go on it this year
is it the same species you get in British waters,what tackle would i need ,floatation suit etc..

Firstly there're others more qualified to comment about what you might need for fishing on that charter boat. I suspect that most of the fishing is likely to be jigging for species like Cod.

However I noticed on the side banner that came up against your posting that one of your favourite rods is a spin rod. Certainly to the north of Denmark, the area's called Zeeland, they target Sea Trout, some 20lb plus, from the shore with either spin or fly fishing tackle. From that, as well, there's a more comprehensive link to Saltwater fly fishing in Denmark - something I hadn't realised they catch lots of Garfish!

Slightly further afield, from Southern Sweden - although they're possibly fishing the same type of grounds in the Baltic - they target Salmon in the Spring on spin gear set to run deep. Re-reading the report from our web site - http://www.scbi.org.uk/pages/News_WhatsNewNfc200405.asp - they fish with specialised rods and planers or downriggers. And, your point about floatation suits, it looks - from the photographs with that report - that it's a tad chilly even in the Spring!

EFSA fished their Boat Championship out of Helsingor, at the southern end of the Kattegat, in August. There's a brief report identifying the species they caught, and an observation about the Cod fishing, that may be of help. The url's - http://www.efsa.co.uk/euro-boat-champs-2005.html.

hi dave when i was there last winter i only managed two trips to the shore we were using spinning rods and what they call blics which i think is a long rectanglar spoon something like a flasher upto 28 grams .the coastline there is fantastic ,alot of mixed ground alot like the uk but on both times fishing it was only an hour each time ,with the hole family standing there watching,my chest waders on up to my waist in the baltic and believe me it was bl..dy baltic.thats why this year the boats a must tight lines gary

I used to fish Denmark a lot. Usually west Jutland in the summer. But I've fished a few other places as well.

im staying in a town called haslov
there is a harbour about 45mins away in a town called coog im not sure if the spelling of the places are correct but never mind
have been going there for christmas for the last couple of years
and i hope my fishing liscence for denmark is still ok
will be staying there for about 3 weeks dont expect to do much fishing(worse luck) ,
but last year when i was overi got talking to a guy in one of the tackle shops in coog and he was telling me about a fishing boat that steams out from there
so i would really like to give it a try this time round any info will be much appreciated

I guess "coog" is "køge", a small town on the eastern coast of zeeland.

I don't know your preferences in fishing, but in the winter there is a very good fishing for perch in the local rivers. In Køge itself is the local river, a somewhat hidden perch venue, but also another river, Tryggevælde å, which has day tickets. A bit further north, close to copenhagen is a place called St. Vejle, it is already buzzing with action, several big perch to 5 lbs is landed on an almost daily basis.

If you want to fish in salt water, then you could either try fishing directly from the shore, catching seatrout. It's not the best time of year, but you could catch.

If you want to go boat fishing, then Elsinore (Helsingør in danish) is the place to go. I don't know if all the boats are booked around christmas, but don't expect any places near new years eve. Some boats target cod and only cod. You will need heavy equipment to master the somewhat tricky currents of the sound. Another option is one of the regular boats which mainly go for herring at that time plus the odd cod that hunts in the herring shoals. These boats mainly drift, so you could jig from one side or use heavy casting gear from the other side. They catch the most cod, but the other boats catch the biggest.

The prime time for cod in the sound is from january to march, an estimated total of roughly 1000 cod above 10kg's are landed every year, but it ain't a pretty sight due to the heavy equipment foul hooking too many cod.
