View Full Version : Fishing Tackle - Non angling use !!
What use has anyone seen fishing tackle been put to apart from angling purposes?
Heard of a fella that uses his shakespeare box as a paint tray for his roller while painting his house.
Cutting your toenails with your mustad scizzors does not count.
at work we use 8oz leads to put down ducting to thread through rope.. then pull cable..
and used half my rod as a extension pole when painting the building at work, got me the extra few feet above me where i couldnt reach on a ladder :D

I know a bloke who uses an abu 7000 for flying his kite!!
I`ve been told by a Met Officer that the tip sections of Nemesis are used in the Cairngorm high up to mount ice sensitive monitoring instruments. The sway of the tip in the high wind stops the ice forming apparently.

Whether this sounds believable or not, it is all true.
We have an International 130ST (the BIG gold one) with the British Antartic Expedition for use with weather balloons
We have a Senator reel with a Norwegian experimental team, ready to go to the ISS, to allow exercise in space - the reel providing constant resistance for use in a climbing wall experiment. Been in testing underwater for 2 years now.
We have a GTI reel with Qinetic pending their balloon altitude record - will be used for deploying a series of instruments attached to the base of the capsule of a circling "model plane"
Oh, and I undersand that there are a few reels out there actually been used for fishing ! ;)

i used a free spool of 80lb leader that i got from sea dangler as strimmer cord. [needed to finish the lawn as the mackerel were in].
4oz lead and line as plumb line.
old 30lb line gets used to lash my 12ft christmas tree to the bay window.
sad i know but i have a noose of 15lb line attatched to the top of the christmas tree that goes around the angels neck to stop it falling off.
Used a coarse pole to lift a spare set of keys through a neighbour's letter box after they locked themselves out...

lol, ive used 80lb for my strimmer before.
and i have also used 160lb to set up ''slack line'' in the back garden so that a friends son could train while he was at my house.
whilst working at a clients house managed to lock myself out of there house,
saw the top window was open and managed to slide my mullet rod through the window and got the tip ring to fit inside the metal loop on the the key chain that was sitting on the table,
saved my embarresments big time, and shut the boys up saying that'll never work

I use the bottom two sections of an old telescopic landing net handle to mount my TV aerial onto, it's strapped onto my balcony railings with a couple of cable ties.
My better half used some old 12lb red ice to hang home made paper Christmas lanterns up that her and my 2yr old daughter made last year.
Cheers

I use my rod and reel to teach worms how to swim.
Given the topic heading I use the following:
A Penn Surblaster Rod, a Penn 525 Mag Reel, 200 yards of 18lb ultima line, 10 yards of Penn 60lb shockleader, various swivels, beads, links, fish hooks, bait and sinkers.
Then guess what I do with it.
I twirl it round and round a bit and use the Penn Surflblaster Rod, Reel and line to fling the whole lot out to sea. I then stand around doing nothing for 20 or so minutes then I bring it all in again and do the same again, some times all day and all night long.
Mad or what????????????

I've used a 9' spinning rod, reel and 1oz lead to place a climbing rope over buildings for rope access work. (Cast it over, attach rope, then reel rope back over building with it) Someone has to flick the rope while the other 'plays' it back to the rod or else the resistance and abrasion will just snap the 15lb line.
We do get some funny looks but its a quick way of placing a rope. One day I'll spanner the lead through a client's window though!
I've used line to make a netting to stop the blooming doves from nesting in my satelite dish.:nono:

I made a pretty impressive repair to a broken sofa using 100 steel leader. It has lasted a few months now, which means I'll not bother replacing the sofa!
Use a battery operated tip light as a car theief deterent just switch it on at night and put on the dash board of my van.

Using my spinning rod I tie an unharmfull light object on to line, then when my 2 cats are around I cast and drag the thing over the grass, you have never seen anything like it it drives them potty trying to catch the thing. Great fun, all cat owners should try it.
When I was a kid, me and my mates used to fish LLandudno pier.
One day when it was quiet, we tied a length of 80lb line accross the width of the pier, at about 6" high. An invisible trip wire:nono:
Soon enough a school party emerged strolling down the pier, full of enthusiasm....
And yes, you guessed it!! The whole front row, about 6 of them tripped over the line and fell face first!

OK teebee will try braid
Playing backgammon in Turkey one year herself managed to drop one of the dice onto the tiled floor. It then bounced all the way and plopped into the pool (which was closed). I went gack to the room and got the top section of my spinning rod and proceded to use the top ring to guide the dice up the side of the pool until I could reach it. It wasn't easy (took about 20 minutes) and the other folks round about started betting on wether or not I could do it.

I use a 4 oz weight and 20lb line as a "plumb Bob" at work as the wind doesnt catch the line unlike normal brick line .
Cheers
Put the bob in bucket of water to stop it moving in the wind
