Trout down deep

Is it only me but is anybody else struggling to catch at the moment, where i fish the water is still really cold and the fish are down deep. I've tried fishing a di-7 with a load of different flies but still nothing. There are no fish moving either, other people are catching but only the odd one or two. What i have heard off the locals is a fast sinker with a booby fished slow, i've tried and failed, any ideas boys?

Huw when I used to seriously trout fish (Llandegfed/Chew/Blagdon every other week),in a cold spring I used to find a Di7 with a large booby on the point and two small (14-18) buzzers on the droppers inched back (30 yard cast would often take 20 minutes to fish out) was the only way often to catch.The depth of the water was often crucial,we would fish in 15 to 25 feet of water around a drop off,picking fish up as the flies came up from the bottom.You really have to concentrate,and lift into any slight resistance/change in the feel of the line.If you wait for a pull you won't catch many,as they are quite gentle until the weather warms up.Hope this helps!

Totally agree with steve w, its like a buzzer and as the saying goes "there only one way to fish this fly, dead slow or stopped"

I tend to fish with bloodworm patterns on a medium retrieve at this time of year and get more success this way. Maybe it's the fisheries i go to but it works for me :)

Down my way all the fish are coming out to either cats whisker or dawsons olive fished on either intermediate or fast sinker. Had a couple out the other day on a bloodworm pattern fished just under the surface. Must admit fishing has been slow for past 3 weeks.

Huw I'm going to be teaching a couple of people to tye flies shortly if you like I'll tye up some buzzers for you.(I'm also going to tye up some sandeel feathers at the same time!)

Hiya, Up here in Central Scotland, on our local club loch, the fish are going for Green damsels and green/black flies/lures...
Fished on a slow sink line ,with a medium retrieve.....my mate and his boat partner had over 40 fish yesterday on a C@R ticket....and thats not unusual..:):)

Aha, At our local club water.....membership is only £80 a year for 7 days...:) doubled up to 14 with a mate..:)

Are they really down deep ? or is that what every one is telling you ? Work the depths, start with a floater or slime line and weighted flie, then move down over time, you may be surprised at what depth the fish are.
