Ancient reels !!!!!!!!!!!

Was having a sort out of my fishing cupboard the other day and came upon these two very old reels. Both dated from about the late 1960s.

The Penn Surfmaster was last aired about 4/5 years ago for a boat trip when I lent it out to someone.

It is still in fine working order and I am thinking of using it quite a bit more this year. May even give it a blast off the beach again for old times sake.

The Mitchell 489 has not been used in anger for about 35 years !!! I cleaned it up and checked the innards - it still had its factory grease on. Amazing or what.

I have now respooled it and have a cunning plan for it. Tope off the shore in Luce Bay. Lets see if it happens. After all will be spending the whole summer over there.

Has anyone else out there got any ancient fishing gear that they still use on a regular basis ?

I am still using my Penn Delmar that I bought in 1962, I also have in excellant condition, and I will use if I do any freshwater fishing, a Speedia centre pin dating from about 1964/ Also in my armoury are a Shakesspeare Wonder reel, still in use, and I have just aquired a Penn 60 Long Beach to use. To add to that I have an Intrepid Elite Fixed Spool which is just about usable.

don't know how old but i got a Olympic dolphin 635-LW. Look's the same size as a 4/o pen.

that brings back memories. the large mitchel fixed spool was my first real sea fishing reel. that reel did some work and never let me down.

Not sure if they count as ancient but I still have my first real beachcaster I was given as a teen- an Edgar Sealey Sea Spray beach rod along with an Intrepid surfcast FS reel in perfect condition- not even a squeak.

Just had a look at it and wonder how I ever used it- it's so heavy compared to modern rods but I guess we were a lot harder and stronger in the olden days

Dunno about ancient but i've still got and use 5 Cardinal 55's,beautiful reels and in thier time the must have reel for Carping.Get used now for light fishing Estuaries etc.

A regular combination for my winter pier fishing is a Daiwa Magforce PMF57H on an Abu Atlantic484, not a light pairing but it doesnt wobble in the wind, one of my favourite boat reels is still my Polikansky 2/0 with lever drag, about a million years before its time, & I only have 2 reels that are post 1970, a fixed spool I bought last year for spinning, (because my old Mitchell 300 fell apart) & an Abu6500 which my son gave me for fathers day last year, the rest of my gear is "mature",:whistling:

I still use an Edgar sealey Coastar solid glass rod,a 21st birthday present in 1965,work that out!.Have to say its worn better than me!!!

I've got an old Mitchell 316 that belonged to my Grandfather, he died in 1969 so god know's how old it is but it's still in good working order.
