hi all something a little different
its not often I get to post in this section ill be getting my new rod from stan m soon its a 6lb boat rod and want a small reel to go on it

what I want to know is what REELS you would recommend to go on it its a 18mm but I'll be using 12lb braid on it I have a old 7ht that stan says would be about the right size so what do you think to using that or what do you recommend about that size id like it to have a fast retrive if it will be used for everything from flatys to tope
could you post a link if poss on your reply too if you know also a amount of line retreved per turne

cheers all

nice retrieve the slosh, i love mine, not a small reel though!

I'm not sure there is a reel (5000-6500 abu sized) that has a fast retrieve, other than the new 6500 6:1, but i'm not sure how strong those are if you had to winch a fish up, be interested to see what you decide to do.

hi
iv got a slosh 30 already but think this could be too big what sort of size is the is the new saltist 20h at the side of a slosh 20
id use my 7ht for bream, flatys etc its just when trying to work jellys i want the extra speed and tope for the power as i said it will be on a 6lb class max 12lb braid so i wont be forcing anything ill be taking it steady

the saltist is a little smaller than the slosh, I think, but probably heavier due to the fact that its all metal, barely any plastic/graphite/composite materials at all. the okuma would be ideal

Hi Hugh - the Abu 6500 C4 has a 6.3:1 retrieve but as you say it, as with any Abu 5000/6000 series reel, is not a winch. I certainly wouldn't use it for tope. It would be fine for flatties though as long as we're not talking about skate, halibut, etc.

My (pretty full) spool:
http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/cc86/OHTer/DSC00269.jpg
Line retrieve came in at 31 inches for a handle turn, but I daresay you could add a couple more inches to that if the spool was full to the brim.Retrieve ratio is 6.2:1.
Hope this helps:thumbs:

Hmmmmm:
Slosh n saltist: bit big/heavy
charter and shimanos: slow retrieve
avet: dunno, but well expensive
7ht: crappy handle, not much winching power for your needs
Abu: levelwind and not cheap

Okuma would win it for me :yeah:

So far nobody has mentioned the smoothest, most hard-wearing and easiest reel to use - the Fladen Maxximus range... After borrowing a 777 with big mono for a while and now using a 555 with braid I've sent the ABU to the reserve's bench :)

Lol, nah mate I dont, but I do have 1 that I'm thinking of selling, lol. Only bought it really for the fast retrieve, but have just bought a slosh 30, which has bigger capacity, and will suit my needs better (congering )

Okuma gets may vote. I am new to sea angling and was given an older Abu 7000 which was great but with level wind.
I managed to find a brand new Okuma MG-20CS on eBay delivered for £45. Top value for a great reel. 5 year guarantee as well so this has to be taken into account as well when looking for value for money.

I'd suggest the Avet SX-2 speed for running fish and pollacking etc. (a bit over the top for just flatties and bream), but

Have you considered a centrepin ? Top Quality centrepins are getting cheaper now (as little as £80 for a good, strong one from the Far East - for example the Okuma Aventa).

SURE, the retrieve is a bit slow (it is hard to get a lightweight 'pin of more than 5 inches diameter) but the feel of it can be great fun.

Stan will tell you not to fit a TLD2-30 on it :- not only will it be waaay too big, but after a few hours of playing a Blue Marlin it may give up the ghost LOL !

hi
as a bit of a giggle last sumer i used a penn generation 75 baitcaster reel with 20lb braid in the bristol channel fishing for straps, small eyes and thornbacks. biggest fish i landed was around 35lb strap. reel held lovely, very smooth never gave me any concerns. It Holds miles of line i use it fishing deep water wrecks (120ft) and have never had any problems landing or for any of the inshore reefs and wrecks in this area.

hope this is food for thought:icecream:
