Have always wondered what this involves and how it would look, as i often see quite a few boats close in. Well, i guess that if you see two boats side by side with a net inbetween them then this is trawling and that is illegal and should be reported.

I presume you have seen this being carried out while you were SHORE ANGLING and that's why you popped it on this section? Tony.

How do we know that vessels pair trawling are not targeting bass, is there an easy way to know or do we just report all pair trawling when we see it inshore?

I was just merely pointing out an illegal act, as this old news article is the first piece of reliable information I have seen about trawling. What is wrong with sharing that with others?

When I first put the question out, there was really nothing that answered my quesitons of 1) is it ilegal, and 2) what it would look like.
This news article informs newbies such as myself as to what it would look like if it were going on. Surely this should be a noble act as I am trying to let other fishermen know about illegal acts which affect us all, and the fishes that we are trying to catch?

The reason I put this article out was to help others out who didn't understand what trawling is about, not cause upset for a minority.

As a relative newbie, this forum has been really informative, helped my fishing a great deal and been good fun. I am quite stocked by some of the responses to be honest, as I didn't think that this forum was like that. I shall know for next time.

I'm with you on this one TimmyButler. We shore anglers and boat fishermen should be more aware of what is legal and what isn't regarding inshore trawling.

In my opinion there should be total bann on inshore trawling. If anyone wants to catch fish inshore in large numbers, they should have to apply for a licence which should be line caught only.

Completely agree with that Ulsterman. It makes great sense, for everyone involved in Fishing except for the commercials.

With regards to some of the responses of this thread (and some have been deleted), I think that this thread speaks for itself, and that anyone reading this is free to make up their own opinions on the issue, and the responses given.

What I do not want to do, is cause an upset, as that was not the intended plan. Each to their own, etc. The high majority of WSF'ers make this forum a great place to be, and that is the way it should be. For the small minority, it's probably better to just ignore it. That's what i've learnt from this, anyway.

I wouldn't be worried about causing an upset m8, if anything needs rectifying we should have the right to call for changes. This thread has identified a major problem in that it's hard to identify who's fishing illegally and who isn't. Do we report every trawler we see? This thread highlights the necessity to ban inshore trawling, thus solving the many problems which can arise. The issue is how far offshore do we call for the ban?
