need some advise wenever I use the bait clip on an impact lead half the time its still clipped up wen I bring it in normally on a pulley rig! If read the books and can't see anything wrong with my rigs any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I had that problem too - it was caused because i was baiting the full hook like for a flapper rig - then when clipping hook in it was a bit of a squeeze and the bait (especially black lug) was binding the hook in

but since i have been leaving the full curve of hook bare to go into clip clean - end of problem

It went against my instinct to leave so much bare hook (not just the point) - but my catches are still OK

i mainly us impact shield clips now and these seem more or less foolproof (needed for me)

if not this - then it could be rig design (complicated - pictures required)

have you lads used IMPS ? they clever little devils, alwas release the hooks, very good, ive never had any problems since changing to them, they are available on here and on ebay.

A couple of things to check. Make sure the impact shield is able to move up the rig body with gentle pressure. Secondly, make sure the impact shield is positioned snug up against the bead and crimp so that movement of the shield will eject the hook. Personally I prefer to use a breakaway impact lead but those imps are very good also.

Could be sand or grit stopping the shuttle to move up and eject the hook . A retrieved rig dropped on the beach is wet and sand and grit will stick to it and stop it from working when cast out . I have found imps to be a good alternative however when fishing at dungeness i have retrieved rigs with the plastic part missing . I put this down to the extreme presure put on the clip when pulling out of the sea bed because the tide has buried the lead in the mud. It has never happen on any other venue.

Hi,
Three things affect release -

1. Plastic not pushing / forcing out hook. This can be caused by either the hook bend being masked with too much bait, making the fit too tight in the clip, or sand siezing it up, as already mentioned. Also it can be caused by fishing in too shallow a water, although it would have to be seriously shallow.
When fishing on sandy bottoms, the impact lead needs to be rinsed in the surf after each retrieve for perfect release on the next cast.

2. Snood set too tight, maybe also the use of an over-tensioned SRT spring also? As long as the hook doesn't come away from the impact lead when hung from the rod tip prior to casting, it will be ok - it does not need to be under much tension at all.

3. Keeping the line too tight after casting. Thumbing as line hits the water, and then releasing again normally does the trick - obviously irrelevant if using a fixed spool.

However, I must say that you have to be really unlucky to not get a perfect release every time - these things are normally foolproof, and one of the best inventions ever made for beachfishing at distance.
