I didn't realise there were any in the Severn cfish!

any idea what size?

blankerman
22-04-2008, 22:32
yes,the pike was in the severn near tewkesbury.
as for catfish, myself and many others are convinced they are there.last summer my cousin hooked something,he played it for half an hour, whatever it was would just swim slowly to wherever it wanted...not a lot he could do about it.later that night he caught a 23 1/2 lb carp, which he reckoned was'nt even half the fight.i've also heard of heavy braid being snapped and trebles straightened....be prepared:fish:

Hi blankerman,

is that pike a definite? have you seen any proof?

i might give the catfish a go sometime i reckon...it's all in the timing of the weather and moonphases!

cheers

Hi blankerman,

Tewkesbury used to be quite well known for 20's but a 35 is a whole different ball game.

I certainly wouldn't discount it as it is possible, it's just that I have spent way too much time chasing fish that might not exist. Nowadays I need proof..unless I find a water that I think has the potential in terms of foodfish, angling pressure and so on and fancy a challenge.

food for thought though..cheers for the info.

obviously depends what gear he was using but if your mate played a fish for 1/2 hour on strong gear and got done it is almost definitely a catfish...nothing in the UK pulls like that apart from catfish. I only use 50lb braid in the UK now having got smashed on the take on 28lb braid a few years ago!

cheers

funny you should mention cats,my mate who fishes the avon, had exactly the same experience,i can say exactly where it was.under the simon demountford bridge, near evesham.it was just going dark one night and he hooked something that for 20 mins just kept going back and for infront of him.now this guy knows his fishing and swears it was a cat.didnt see it,snapped him.

i was speaking to a guy who fishes the severn near myth, his mate is into his pike, but the last several years he has been getting beaten up on his pike gear, never happened prior to that.don't know the location, just know it is above myth bridge.
damn, can't wait for the season to start now.looks like i may need a 30lb boat rod and a dusting off of me old abu 9000:laugh:

just had a search, the 35lb was caught at the dead arm last november.the same month also produced a 25lb in the marina.

if there was a 35 caught then...WOW...that is some fish, especially for the Severn....that is my dream English fish.

very interesting thread about all these people getting done on solid gear...it very much sounds like catfish. I have thought that they are probably in most of the main rivers for a few years now but haven't had the time to chase them. they were actually stocked into the Ouse legally a few years back.

certainly something to keep my eye on and maybe a trip or two later in the year.

if anyone wants any advice on how/when to catfish let me know and i'll sort you out.

Salmonking.. did you find anything in my PM of any use regarding Spain and France?

cheers all

hi marc, yes your reply was great, and even better the wife's have said we can go on our own!!!!so we are looking into going next spring/summer.any idea's on prices mate?what are we roughly looking at?think spain might be the better option?

marc portch

Hi Salmonking,

might sound a bit harsh but it is good news for you that you can go on your own..spain is a much better option but there isn't that much for families to do.

if you go on the Catmaster website it gives you prices and all the info for the fishing and accommodation.

what you will need to add to that is the cost of your flights and insurance (book early and it is cheaper), beer and food money, and bait - flight cost £90 - £150.

food is not bad...the guides pick up whatever you want and bring it to you on the bank. your beer cost obviously depends on you but mine is usually quite high...lol! (well I am on holiday!!)

Bait depends on how much you want to use but the guides know what works and they don't overdo it. you should be looking at about 100euro each for bait. ( I have heard some of the dodgy guiding services charging 3-4 times this!!!)

Thats it matey..of you go!

they pick you up from Barcelona airport and drop you back there for your flights. different airports obviously have different flights so you must try to coincide arrivals/deaprtures with the pick up/drop off times.

All in I would budget for about £1000 for the week but you can do it cheaper...i've probably got £100 - 200 for beer in that!

you just need to decide when you want to go fella..let me know by PM when you are thinking and I can advise...different months = different numbers/size of fish.

all thats left is to look forward to it mate...you would be very unlucky not to catch a 100lb+ fish..with a good chance of a 150lb+...could even get a 200lber but i want that one when i go in September! lol

cheers
