I've noticed a lot of threads asking which rod is best for rough ground, clean ground big tides, small tides, bass, cod, flounder, long casting, pier fishing and so on.
Would any one be disappointed to catch a cod over rough ground on a bass rod?
Over the years I think I have caught most of my fish on "the wrong rod".
I realise that you need certain rods for specific areas but how many of us use our favourite rod,and how many would not fish a venue without a rod supposedly designed for that type of venue, even at the loss of a session.
Is all the hype about rod types just that or is there really that much difference between a £50 4-8oz beachcaster and a £350 4-8oz beachcaster?

Fair comment, I have an old Fladden that goes most places with me, doesn't matter what the target is.
As for the price difference, no it's not all hype. Those that have the skills will cast the expensive rod a lot further than the cheap one. For most anglers though, it won't make much difference and may even be worse as they don't have the technique to compress the expensive rod properly.

I agree with your comment that anexpensive rod in the right hands will go a lot further ,but will it play and land a fish any better?

I'll let you know if I ever buy one and land a big fish with it.
yes it will, years ago split cane rods landed really good fish.
there is a lot of snobbery in fishing these days(you cant be that good cos you havnt got the latest gear).
my 8yr old catches decent fish with the minimum of gear and expence

Yes a good expensive rod designed for a good and experienced caster will be of little further benefit than a cheapish one in the hands of someone who cant get the best from it and may prove too much of a handfull.
However, apart from longer casting capabilities there is also often better bite detection, better tip stiffness to combat tide and wind movement and with better rings and build quality, also easier to land bigger fish etc...Plus it will proably last longer if looked after correctly.
However, it won't attract or catch fish any more than using a cheaper rod as long as you can get your tackle and bait to where you want.
What really matters is that you enjoy using the rod, it does what you need and what anyone else thinks is irrelevant.
As for different types for different venues, it can make a difference in boats and on piers obviously, as big beachcasters are too cumbersome, but the only real advantage of a lighter and shorter estuary or bass rod is if you are wanting to hold it long periods, travel lighter and perhaps get a better fight from the species you target.
Each to their own at the end of the day.
That's my thoughts.

Well said Top cat my feelings exactly.
Snaggletooth,I use a century tt match mostlyand have 6 century rods and 3 other cheap rods but I really can't see any difference in fish playing abilities. This may be due to the fact that I'm so chuffed toget something that I don't take much notice of the curve on the rod!!
if your playing a fish correctly then its the knowledge and skill of the fisherman that counts.
if your fishing piers etc then a drop net will be used to land the fish.
Both the rods i use for shore work cost under £30 each and work allright, if someone can afford to and wants a more expensive rod then fairplay to them! I personally dont care what i use long as i catch a few fish and enjoy just being out and about.

Cracking comment cfish at the end of the day its upto the individual, you see the same in any sport, would tiger woods be as good at golf if he used cheap clubs,,,,yes
Would ronaldiniho be as good in £10 boots yes
then it comes down to our level, would a kid at school play the same in those boots no ,but he wouldn't be seen dead by his mates in a pair of £10 boots, thats the way life is in all warps of life,
Do people really need ferrari's ..........no, do they look cool and turn heads yes,
People want the best and if they can afford it they get it ,and sometimes when they can't

I still think that one of the most common reasons why folk buy dearer rods is that they do think that they will catch more fish with them, which of course they won't. An experienced angler with a cheap rod will always outfish a less experienced one with an expensive one.

i have caught some of my best fish , as in bass and mullet on a 5 to ten pound telescopic rod.., but with shore fishing i do have some quality rods and reels as i like the feeling of the rods better and am capibale of casting better distances, say i had a 30 pound multiplier and 25 pound rod i dont think i would get half as far as im casting now lol should get me :happy:
dean
then again both my bass were in close and my mullet :lmao: :lmao:
