Oi Tom,
Here you go. 20 mins fast n furious at 5 Mile beach. Caught 3, lost 1 in the waves. I let them all go anyhows, freezers already groaning.

70g halco twistys do it every time. Unfortuately, they did for me last weekend too. Same spot, decent fish on, big bend in rod, then fish jumps, spits the lure which come whipping back at me. Felt it hit my foot, looked down and 'oh dear me...' treble hook seems to be attached to / in my foot, barb n all. Had no choice but to go for the big pull. Yank... OUCH... Sue retching on the beach. Good bit of claret n all. Nothing for it but to step back into the water & let that blood berley them back up for me. Worked a treat too. Couple of casts later, bang, another fish.

Tell Mitch to hurry up n grow, so youse guys came come for a looksee down this way....

Later
Omar

wassat.... No piccies of hooked foot available. haven't always been taking camera to beach. sand vs electronics; sand usually wins. Only a flesh wound. As to blood in the surf, bound to get them all fired up. Mate of mine goes and shoots a roo so he can burley up the beach when shark fishing. does pretty well too. Not sure the local parents agree but. what with their kiddies trying to swim out to the pontoon....

Joke.. He doesn't burley up the swimming beach, only those nasty rips where noone will swim?????

Here we go. Sea was very angry indeed today. Managed to land these 2 though. Loads of other hits but they kept coming off as the 4m swells rolled over the reef. Heart in the mouth fishing.

Hopefully the swells will scour out some good deep gutters to check out over the coming nights. Have started shift work now Tom. 7 days on loading shots on the bomb crew followed by 7 days off. Plenty of time for fishing.

Have included a shot of last weeks mishap. Took it today so has healed up loads since then.

sweet - any other fish take lures there? - any jacks of similar?

Quite a few fish'll take a lure down here.

Herring, bream, mulloway, salmon, tailor (USA call them bluefish), skippy (skipjack trevally). But when the salmon are on (10 months of the year on this stretch of south coast), thats what you go for cause they readily smash it & fight dirty. I have tried to catch a mulloway down here for the last couple of years. no luck yet. They get biiig. saw a photie of a 40kg fish taken off the beach 2 weeks ago. Monster.

Mulloway, see the link below will tell you a bit about them.

http://www.tackleworld.com.au/Fishing%20Tips/Mulloway.html

The piccie I have attached I scarfed off the net. I wish I could claim that one.

I have given up on the braid for now. Most of the fishing I do at mo (spinning at least) is off the beach & over a reef. I got sick of getting cut off on the rocks. Monos a lot more forgiving ( not to mention 1/4 of the price.......

Heres some pics of the biggest mulloway I ever got. Just shy of 40lb gutted. Twas a couple or 3 years back up in Kalbarri. I'm itching to bag one of these down here. Few & far between, but they are big. I had best get on with it, I wont catch one without a big bait soaking......

do they take a lure - or you just bait fish for the mulloway? (thats a cracking fish :) )

They do (apparently) take a lure. I've never had one other than on bait. Good thing about bait is if there are no mulloway around, theres always sharks n rays......

Live herring or whiting is best, no wire trace either; they spook easy. Problem with that is, mono for mulloway but sharks bite you off...

Another beach, another salmon. Not on lures this time. WA pillies on ganged hook. Hammersley beach, Fitzgerald National Park, Hopetoun, WA. What a spot. Only way in is by 4 WD, over the dunes. Usually got the place to ourselves.

WA Pillies = Western Australian Pilchards known locally as Mulies. Cracking bait, but they don't tend to last to long on the hooks.

Just finished my week on. Now got a whole week off. Weathers looking pretty good. Swell looks a bit big; but I'll have a crack & maybe catch the big mulloway I HOOKED last wednesday. Yes, the one that got away. Cardinal sin; my knot slipped. Lots of heavy headshaking and hard long runs before that happened though. I know it wasn't a shark or a ray. So in these waters, I think it had to be a good mulloway.

Best get to it eh????

Another salmon from 5 mile yesterday. Honestly thought this one was a biiig mulloway. Didn't jump; plenty of strong long runs; 20 mins hard fight. When I got it onto the beach, I saw I had jagged it bang in the middle of its back. No wonder it felt much bigger......

Good fish though, 4.5kg gutted n gilled. Stomach was full of pilcards & whole herring.

When we were heading back up the dune to the car, saw a whale cruising along the other side of the reef. A bit early, but always good to see.
