Gents,

Just to ensure that I am correct. I caught this yesterday:

http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g120/garethp_2006/IMGP0518.jpg

I originally thought it was a tiny Turbot, but after talking to some other anglers and having such things as the lateral line, spots on the fins and mouth pointed out to me, I am now content that it is a strangely marked Plaice.

Can you just confirm this to stop me wondering for the rest of the year, as others are now suggesting Brill on the Ravenspoint report on the N Wales forum.

Many thanks.

I'd say an unusually marked plaice, it's a most strange looking creature. I'll send your pic to Alan Yates if you don't mind and see what he thinks.

Strange isn't it! Got the markings of a brill and the mouth of a plaice!

Perhaps it's a Prill?

As it was only 2 inches long it was put back to grow and confuse someone else in the future!

That explains it, I thought you had some novelty sized scissors!

p.s. it does look like a little plaice, but what do I know.

Fairly standard juvenile Plaice - common enough I'd have thought to not need much debate :)

Small Plaice without a doubt!

Irish sea is the spawning ground for these fish, and you can see them in large deep sand pools at low water. West Shore at LLandudno is an example. As a kid I caught loads of them in bamboo nets and wondered what they were.

East coast of Anglesey is renowned for plaice over sand, so I would bet my Shimano gear that it is a plaice!

Hiya,

Tis certainly not a Brill and from the pic it looks like it has rough scales along it's lateral line. If that is the case, that alone with the lack of Orange spots would suggest a small Flounder rather than a Plaice... but I wouldn't put money on it :)

Now i thought I had caught some tiny flatties but that beats me hands down. Looking at the colours on the picture in question we have started getting Flounders in the Moray Firth with the same light marking on them but just from one beach at Sandend,Strange:giveup:

Tis deffo a small Turbot (the second Pic) as for the eyes.. you get left and right handed flounders so it's not a good ID feature to go on

What I wanna know is....what size hook? 6/0? :lmao:
Looks like a baby turbot to me, not properly developed yet. Dont forget though, that flatfish arent flat when theyre born, the start life upright, the same as round fish, so identification ca be a problem until theyre fully developed

I go with plaice, :victory:

Someone commented on my joke flounder post, apparently Jersey Flounder are all left hookers, must be a WW2 thing?

The flounder has a roughly oval shape, with both eyes on the right side of its head and has a small mouth and pointed snout. The lateral line curves slightly around the pectoral fin. It has a smooth body except for some rough scales along the lateral line and a row of prickly humps along the base of the dorsal and anal fins. The caudal peduncle is long, accounting for about half the length of the tail. The topside colour is variable from dull brown to greyish-green, often with small orange spots, while the underside is white. The flounder grows up to 50 cm in length.

Spot on, regarding the eyes, although most do lie on their left side, some do lie on the right. Never actually counted the difference, although I would think that regarding the ones on the Scottish side of the inner Solway the ratio must be about 100 to 1.
For interest, this season I will collate the figures from flounder caught by friends and self, during the remainder of this year. Which hopefuly will be in the region of 300 or more. and will photograph a few side by side opposites.
