whats the best tactics for this 1 baited muppets/hokkais? what size of hooks?
peterthefisherman
10-07-2008, 15:41
For Arbroath I tend to use a 2 down 1 up rig - size 2/0 - 4/0 hooks are fine - beads ,blades ,muppets etc. all help to attract
weights 6 oz to about 12 oz and plenty of them
baited hokais work very well - but put a rotton bottom on the weight to minimise losses
lug mussell and mackerel (ling love fishbaits) are all great but squid and rag will also catch
We fish quite a few competitions there so do be afraid to ask for advice or pm me if you want
To minimise losses of tackle I use 50 lb braid on the reel 70 Lb rig body and 25 Lb snoods - I always have a few extra snoods to replace those that beak off
Look forward to seeing you all there

udderman
10-07-2008, 19:19
alright folks
i'm one of those looking forward to this trip and in the coming week will be watching the weather so..
whats the worst wind for arboath then
(never had a ling, so that my personal goal)
peterthefisherman
10-07-2008, 21:28
Easterlies can build a big swell - so best if some "west" in the wind in my view - at the moment it looks good on windguru
Final Details For Trip
1. Sail at 8am at pontoon - park in car park
2. On the Horizon
3. Biggest cod -bottle beer
Most Species - hokais/similar rig
Heavest other fish - Bar of choc
ok for the rest just turn up :fishing1:
Mikeybhoy
12-07-2008, 19:24

next to irnli life boat - car park as soon as you come in
ok lads
do you want a species day out or a cod etc day out
i forgot to ask
reply here asap
how about a bit of both, can try one and if not much is happening try the other
both will do me too
are we allowed to keep the cod or ling caught?

are we allowed to keep the cod or ling caught?
:lmao::lmao::lmao:
anything over min size if ye want
thats good then knowin my bloody luck it will be all little stuff
we only had 3 or 4 wee cod rest were 1.5lb to 5lb
ling were just undersize on sat.
I'll do whatever the skipper reckons will give the best results for the day. We'll probs pick up species with the codling anyway.

if sat anything to go by species along with the mackie

any thing thats a fish i'll be well in
peterthefisherman
13-07-2008, 19:37
I would suggest you fish for cod/ling the other species will come along anyway though to be fair there arent a huge variety.
Today I had 21 fish - mainly cod with a quite a few ballans a ling and a ss sea scorpion the only other species caught were mackerel (about4) and a pouting.
Its really not a place for species hunting in my view.
Should be a great day out - I am looking forward to trying different tactics as you can,t afford to experiment in the matches we fish there.
Look forward to seeing you all there.

Cod and Ling sound great to me!
lads pm for my mobby no for sunday just in case
hi
will 10- 8oz and 10-12oz be enough
ade ye i sometimes go down to a 6oz
is the tide not strong at arbroath ive not fished from boat do we anchor up or drift
I think its mostly drifting Ade for rough grounds species. I'm not sure what it like over the sand......never heard much about it.
peterthefisherman
15-07-2008, 21:12
All drift fishing - can be a bit rough - I lost about 10 weights and 6 snoods on Sat - rotten bottoms are necessary
Should be a great day :clap2:
Aye, i'm looking forward to the meet also. I'm fishing a region match on Saturday at Arbroath so it's a double header for me.
so whats the more effective rig to use
so whats the more effective rig to use
one that catches fish:bleh:
i got some tnt and mini depth chargers should be fine

10lb line do for a rotten bottom (not i'm breaking wind)
i use a paper clip for a rotten bottom
rigs , silver flasha were catching mackie by the bucket load ,
i was using 2 hooks up and 1 on a boom , with yellow/orange beads ,
seems to pull in the cod
Mikeybhoy
16-07-2008, 20:03
anyone got any diagrams of the rigs that are required for this 1? was going to use baited hokkais/muppets but fancy a diff approach
all ive done is done it like flattie rig but one hi and other two lower
im gonna try my gummi makkies was great in norway for cod and pollack
how many rigs roughly am i goig to need to take
ive made 5
Mikeybhoy

Not saying that these are the best, but similar have caught fish at Arbroath.
I don't always add the blade on the dropper snood ( sometimes just have beads ) - but it does add noise as well as visual attraction.
The length on the trace from the boom to end hook varies but usually around 3-4ft.
how many beads to a hook length ive made some with a whole lot of bead and varied amounts
spellbound
18-07-2008, 00:03
It really depends on how many beads you have and are prepared to lose
For me the beads act as a visual attraction - so the clearer the water in theory the less you might need.
What I usually have on the end is 3x8mm and 2x5mm between the blade - it doesn't seem to put the smaller fish off.
What time will you be contacting the Skipper to find out if the trip is on Sultzer?
weather looks ok for sunday nnw 16mph
what rooms on the boat for gear wise will also remember a bin bag for fish
peterthefisherman
18-07-2008, 21:20
If yer taking cod home Adeys - I suggest a bucket or coolbox - if the bag leaks the car is minging for ages - been there got the T-shirt :yucky:
oky dok pete
would i have enough bait
rag
lug
mussel
squid
razor
peterthefisherman
18-07-2008, 22:19
I presume we will get a few mackerel - so should have tons of bait
Were gonna try Elliot beach or Longannet after the match if there is spare bait
Look forward to seeing you there - last time I saw you you were making light work of a pretty decent skate !!!!! :clap3:

Hi peeps - just a thought - seems there's prizes a begging so you need a tally master of sorts.. either a weigh-master or score-keeper.
Weighing individual fish is pretty time consuming - so a measure might be the way to go?
1. biggest cod - bottle beer
2.most species - 1 rig
3.biggest other fish - 1 bar of chocolate
Hope you all have a good time :)
PS - can I have a £1 each way on Peterthefisherman and BMac - both 'sharks' in their own way ! - though a sneaky 50p on the nose for Andy ;)
Have to say the forecast wind wise is not looking great

Have just spoken to Alex Smith and trip will still be going ahead as planned the sea is not as rough down at Arbroath will see you all there.

was worse last week with the forecast but still ok.
problem will be if the boat keeps blowing out instead of with the tide

Sorry to hear about the finger m8, I'm sure we will get a session when your better. Spoke to the skippers today and weather will be fine tomorrow. The usual Lug and Mussel was top bait today although Squid took a few fish also.
