OK folks here is the next one. Flounder or plaice? The mouth seemed weird for a flounder and the spots are rather vivid too.

Over to you - see attached pix!

i would go with a flounder. i have always found the plaice spots to be more even and circular and usually have a dark edge to them.

the orange markings on that fish dont have any regular patern to them.

Flounder. The lateral line is straight, dead giveaway. On a plaice it curves slightly around the gill covers, on a dab it curves right around. ;)

Flounder, as well as the above the diamond shape of the body / fins gives it away

hi my understanding why flounders have some spots is that they have spend time in the sea and get progressivly browner the further up the river they go cheers andy

We ought to have a separate forum for fish photos, especially ones that are tricky to tell apart, once a consensus has been reached here :)

Here's another tester, caught this afternoon at Aberdyfi. About 28cm long, less red spots but some with darker surroundings.... lateral line curves a very little around gills.

Could see muscle chevron patterns through underside - didn't get photo of that as I wanted to get the fish back in the water.

I had a Flounder that looked just like that last night. It had red spots all over, including the skirts, now I no It's not a Plaice, as I caught it at Burnham Lowerlight (Deepest darkest Bristol Channel) But my mate did suggest a possible highbrid?

There have been a few posts here recently, with people saying that they've had Plaice on Brean Down, Brean Beach and Lowerlight. Is it possible that these are highbrids?

Just a though, I do know the difference between Flounder and Plaice! :D
