What is your favourite fly, and why?
Mine is a Silver Doctor as i used one to catch my first ever Sea Trout on Dartmoor when i was a nipper :1a:, it weighed about half a pound but the memories of that fish will always stay with me.

I mainly fish stillwaters so its got to one of my own tied goldhead montana variants :notworthy
mines one of my own patterns called the Brownie Midge
http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii193/fluffchucker67/IMG_0146.jpg
its tied on a size 26 hook
stripped ostrich herl body and the tinyist black hackle you can find.
use it for 90% of my still water fishing.
it works very well on stocked waters when there are fish rising, normally out fishes anything else and perfect for wild browns.
taken rainbows to 9lb 9oz and wild browns to 7lb 2oz
saltwater fly any form of skinny deciever.

I have caught brown, blue, rainbow & sea trout on this fly, it is an alrounder. For a cast of three flies professor, soldier palmer and black pennel could outfish any other three flies for brownies in my opinion:sun:
My favourite fly has to be the Connemara Black. An excellent fly for browns and rainbows on any stillwater in Wales.
It's a difficult decision just picking one fly so here a few of my other choice patterns.

im a huge fan of black spider, midge and bibio patterns, mainly because I fish clear still waters and fish these flys either on or just below the surface.
having said that, ive had a few fish on daddy patterns too, but not wieghted.

trout fisherman recently did a screeching U turn on blobs and now are claiming theyre ate the cutting edge of design! quite different from the fire and brimstone sermons against 'yobs with blobs' of a few years ago. i never use blobs but have been known to use a booby when going after old dogs. never caught any mind you.

black nomad fished near the surface, when the fish are rising but wont take your dries, tie one of these on and strip it back. Works to great effect at lockwood beck.
Wickhams Fancy or Silver Invicta or Kingfisher Butcher..
Memories of childhood and little Wesh hill streams...caught my best ever Aled Brownie on the Wickhams..I can still remember the cast, the take, the fight and the landing..it was 14 oz and thirty years ago!!
At last. A gentleman angler.
And pretty good at quizzes too.
For Stillwater, a Daddy for a dry and a Montana for a wet..........and an Orange Fritz when all else fail's!
For Freshwater, a Spider or a Blue Charm

I have 2. The Goats Toe when fishing those magic loughs of South Uist.
It has caught me Sea Trout to 6lb and Salmon to 9lb, the place is a fishermans paradise.
Allies cascade size 12 treble used every year during my week on the river Drowes in Co Leitrim. The river was bare bones this year but it still took 3 fine grilse and is a great fly. This river is a gem and a weeks salmon fishing will set you back less than a couple of visits to my:clap2: local put and take fisheries.
dry black spider ,
will catch anything on any water simple black hackles and a slim tied black body on a 16-12 wire hook

dont forget the humble bibio and its many variants.like yourself i dont think you can beat those soldier palmers:clap:i used to use a variant with a hen hackle and flat gold rib and more of a light claret body dubbing and no tail.
now we used to catch loads of fish down here when using those afore mentioned fly's as a combo with a skiny stick or a similar pt nymph, daiwalhbach variant (excuse the spelling)on the point fly
i would advise anyone who fishes on a wild open water to try a similar combination when there's a bit of ripple and wind lanes showing using a figure of eight retrieve especialy with cloud cover and dare the fish not to take!!!!!
i know that you will be pleasantly surprised:fishing:
and so captainmorgans i think you're spot on with a soldier palmer and a dark spider pattern but thats what used to work down here and only goes to show how differant locations have similar results so go on and give them a go all the best ben

I like boobys! :clap2:
sorry, i had a childish moment!
Best fly for me has to be a good old pheasant tail nymph.
I know they're out of fashion but I find baby dolls are pretty reliable as well
Dry: Tiny black gnat on river or lake, Wet: skinny black and red (cheeked) buzzer. Bloodworms are great in the winter - caught one just before Christmas last year after the lake owner broke the ice with his boat so that we could fish! (Stowting, Kent).

Hi guys, without a doubt for stillwater trout, mine would have to be a nice sparsely tied 'Diawl Bach' with a thin pearly rib instead of copper or gold wire. I've always tied my own and this pattern has caught me more fish than any other, if the fish are being a bit picky - I just use the same pattern on a smaller hook size - can't go wrong
On the river, it would be a pheasant tail nymph, with one or two turns of brownish red hen hackle to match body colour. I think this pattern is a geat all-round representation of many food items
cheers, :bye1:
CDC and Elk on the rivers or GRHE, Apps bloodworm on the ressies or a black Nomad, Bonito candy in the sea.

Mines got to be a flamethrower for salmon fishing absolutely deadly
hairs ear on round shanked hook and its got to be the ness c for the salmon. which is just a small cascade with a couple of purple strands and as a back up a wee stoats tale or white ghost.
Gold ribbed hares ear for the trout and a silver stoats tail for seatrout and salmon.

I liked hoppers, dries and my fuzzy bumbles and wickoms....they were great in Uist :)

got to be a muddler or ace of spades for rainbows or muddler for sea trout and ally shrimp for salmon or a wille gunne

If all else fails, put on the Montana!
On the salmon water I take about three or four boxes of flies, no idea why, every time, for 30 years plus, stoats tail or thunder stoat (in varying sizes to suit water). If that does not work and light is going down, GP or shrimp fly. Tends to work now and then
Brown trout......Black Zulu
Sea trout.....Peter Ross (or a Sunraw shadow in the sea)
Salmon......um....also carry far too many but I have a liking for wee coneheads and bottle tubes (half inch or less)

If all else fails, put on the Montana! Works for me as well mate. Although when on the river during a sedge hatch its INVICTA. or during a mayfly hatch GREY WULFF. both work on stillwaters. at the right time.:)
Dawsons Olive for me :)
Caught me a bundle of lovely big rainbows over the years, fished just subsurface and stripped fast they go mental for them!

One that catches fish!
Got to be the montana, without a doubt unbeatable in my opinion. Also an olive hears ear nymph, an awsome little fly.
Black and green has to take some beating tho!

these are all very good flies it all depends on where you fish
Salmon:stoats tail/ ally's shrimp
Sea trout: Teal Blue and silver
Brown trout: black spider
Rainbow trout:dark damsel/ black buzzer
grayling:goldhead red tag
All tied sparse, most commercial flies are tied like bog brushes and the other advantage of tying your own is you can add subtle little changes that maybe give you confidence but don't affect the fly eg holo tinsel instead of "ordinary"

I have caught the majority of my fish on either black or gold fritz. Mind this now my third season and i am still learning. Later in the season i will be experimenting with different flies and methods. I can now put three on a long trace and cast a good distance. Recently lost a nice fish on my point fly (is this the one at the end). Used a black wet fly with small gold head which just holds it under the surface.
Mick ps i am also buying trout magazines to wise up.

im very new to fly fishing and tying but i have to pitch in with my fav too.
so far for me most productive have been black buzzer/brassie buzzer patterns,
then nymphs (pheasant/hares ear)
but im starting to enjoy tying as much as fishing and i love the natural looking ptterns. its fascinating learning about all the debates! pple turning red with steam coming outta their ears because of wool indicators and fancy fluffy, luminous lures etc..!! what a laugh huh!
i pefer the patterns which immitate natural insects etc and the above have done best for me so far.
iv caught oe fish on a self tied fly...........a blummin roach!!! was nice hough, well over 1lb! a roach though!! :sneaky2:
