there was the odd green one scattered about that a lad said were plaice eggs and when i was on a different beach where the main catch is plaice there was a fair few of them on that beach as well.

Hiya,

they aint fish eggs.. I'm pretty sure it was egg cases from one of the sand worms

recently the estuary i use has had loads on the mud. i have seen these for years but never knew what the were. i read somewhere that they are ragworm eggs and after closer inspection they are exactly the same colour green as the spawning worms. these also coincided with the mud having loads of green spawning worms in it.

lugdont do this and spawn straight into the water. my traus at some times of the year are either full of eggs [look like sand]or milt as the worms release them into the water.

correct, i think, spent alot of time last term studying marine invertabrates, they are either the egg cases or sperm packets from lugworms.

dabcatcher, rag spawn in midwater, coming out of the sand at night in summer months.

i,m obviously wrong but locally the rag have been spawning for the last couple of months. i know they take to swimming when green though and have seen loads on the surface on a calm night.

the lug i have seen spawn also did so into the water and not in packets.

the mud around my traps can have loads of these little green blobs stuck to the sand in an area that doesnt see flatfish in any quantity, but during the summer the pools around my tires have loads of tiny flatfish about 1/2in long.

the two places i came across them were both clean sand with blow lug on them.
the green ones were round and the ones on the photo were like a tear drop shape.there was hundreds of these.
two different lads both said they were flounder eggs.

fair enough, never said you're wrong, that was what i had read, and not having first hand experience presumed it to be right, bet its a fair sight seeing balls of rags taking to the water.

the link maxie posted seems to have nailed it.

it was me who posted a thread about them a couple of months ago. u may be right there nick, as they were abundant on my local patch...but only near the lugworm bed
