good grief !
what will some presenters try next ?
this puts Kumar Dadlani's underwater video (of free-swimming with a Marlin, after it had been released) in a sort of perspective.

The latest installment from Matt Watson and the Ultimate Fishing Show team.

Don't try this at home , folks (that's if you can get a helicopter in your house) but do encourage Dave Lewis to try it on "Aberthaw Tarpon"
(extra difficulty, with the low visibility in the water !)

It's not that I'm getting jaded with ordinary marlin fishing
(I can find the sight of Tom struggling with wonky stand up outfit and 700lb of Blue as funny as the next man :yahoo: )

but I am asking myself "would it be worth all the effort of getting to a point where I am presenting an extreme fishing show, to be allowed and able to do that ?" and the answer is very nearly "yes !"

hmm....

You don't end up 2 feet deep in the water when jumping from that height. The marlin seemed in no hurry to get away either. Maybe because he was released only seconds earlier? And the presenter jumped from the boat on top of him ?

Cool vid though. :D

Ah Jax, shades of Inspector Clouseau there. Interesting thoughts though.

There’s certainly a problem with continuity that the editor appears to have missed – the shot from the helicopter shows him with expensive sunglasses on that don’t disappear into the depths after his death defying leap. Um … and it is a long way up.

But oddly I can’t see any obvious signs of bubbles from propeller turbulence or, for that matter, the downdraft effect from a helicopter's rotor blades.

Also the presence of the underwater photographer is just a bit odd. If you look at the Marlin though it is 'lit up' which suggested to me that it (and the photographer) was in the proximity of a bait ball. It doesn’t show any obvious signs of stress or panic though to suggest that it had previously been hooked.

I guess the ‘jury’s out’ on that one, but still a clever bit of …. I don’t know what.

I guess like Roger (Ravelling Tangler) I've seen that DVD link posted on other forums, in fact it was the photographer himself, Kezza, on http://www.big-game-board.info. On that an Hawaiian's asked the question but to-date received no reply. Um ... I'm not going to hold my breath though for any response. Patently trade secrets!

That guy Matt (alias ‘Gannet Man’) and his team do make some excellent videos, but always it appears with some angle. The one I have features an incredible 90’ tri-maran game boat, the Ultimate Lady, fishing 300 plus miles north of New Zealand’s North Island on the Wanganella Banks. They get 20 plus Striped Marlin that day. But the last one - part of, and I can’t remember, a four or five fish multiple strike – fought in darkness is attacked by a Giant Squid. No, he’s not in the water to film it but literally all they get back is the head and skeleton.

PS Whilst it’s far from sportsfishing there are a range of individuals around the world who spear fish big pelagics, including Tuna and Marlin. Some even free dive for them. But really to reinforce your point there’s an image on post 106 of this thread - http://www.big-game-board.info/catch-areas-worldwide-english-version/cape-verde/1755-catch-reports-cape-verde-2008/index6.html - that shows a big Blue Marlin that two local Cape Verdeans 2 1 /2 miles off Sal caught with a speargun. It just happened along, normally they’re targeting Wahoo.
