View Full Version : Rod holders
Just treated myself to a Perception scooter beach and absolutely love it. Now with my second hobby being fishing have decided to try and meld the 2 . Has anyone tried the rod holder/zip up bag that clips onto the back of the apex seat ? I'm struggling to find a decent rod holder primarily to enable me to tow a rapala behind the kayak while lazing around the Mew Stone.Had a look at the Scotty baitcaster rod holder today but looked a bit Tat. I can't fit a flush mounted rod holder due to the hull so thought I'd open it up to the experts.
Cheers
Tony
Tony,
nothing wrong with the scotty baitcasters, remember its only to hold the rod, not for hauling fish with. I must admit I would put a backing plate on inside the kayak for strength, that brings access to the inside
of the hull a question.
The scooter has a small tank-well at the back hasn't it? how about a small fold-up crate with some poly tubing cable tied for a rod holder?
I know others use them and can be adjusted for the angle you prefer.
Cheers,
Yes the Scooter beach does have a well at the back , I'd struggle to get a backing plate in the hull though. Maybe I'm looking at this all wrong but I was thinking of fishing with a 12lb Ugly stick and Slosh, is this too heavy? and if you have your rod behind you in a crate in the well and you're trailing a lure then isn't it a pain in the Butt to turn round and get the rod to play the fish with ?
Thanks Bud
Tony
Tony,
12lb boat rod and slosh are ideal, I use them as they provide such a wide range for fishing. As for the rod holder behind you, if you notice on most angler versions, the flush mounts are just behind the seat, they are placed here to keep the rod away away from your paddle stroke. The good thing about the tubing strapped to a crate is you can angle the rods slightly forward to keep the tip in eyes view while trolling.
By setting the drag right, the reel will tell you when you've got a fish on and give you time to deal with paddle and reach behind for the rod.
Although short the scooter is wide enough to sit side saddle so anything stored behind the seat in the well is easily accessible.
Hope this helps,
Chaz
That's brilliant Chaz, thank you very much, best I go dunk myself a few times trying out the side saddle bit !
