Getting started

Right now that my son has been born im going to start having a good go at getting my first kayak. Now with so many to choose from it's like a mine field but im ready for the challenge. My first thoughts on the subject were to go for a big named kayak like the prowler big game. A great looking kayak and not really heard a bad word about them but the price is a bit high at the moment, and don't really want to be spending huge amounts of money until ive got right into it. So now im looking at either the Ocean kayak frenzie or the mini X. So who has got one of these kayak and what are they like? (On the water and storage capacities etc, etc)

Next on my list is a decent PDF, now like the kayaks there are so many on the market im not sure which to really go for, So whats everyone got and what are their thoughts on them. Now i know the old adage "You get what you pay for" but is that really the same with a PDF?

Your probably best off registering with Anglers afloat forum http://anglersafloat.proboards107.com/index.cgi? as I don't think there are many kayakers on here, I'm in the middle of raising funds for a Prowler, cant wait.

I have a mini x I cant say I've had any real problems with it I use it for short range trips off the Norfolk coast its not as quick as the longer boats so not for paddles offshore.

The storage is good loads of room for my tackle, bait etc. easy to store cos of its size. On the sea its very stable indeed the only gripe is the front rod holders allow about a mug of water in the hull when launching in heavy surf, but they could be removed and resealed.

I have a mini x kayak and its great for what I want, easy to store & load on to the car , stable and loads of storage space. The longer kayaks will be faster & require less effort to paddle but thats no use if it wont fit in the garage and you cant lift it onto your car. as for a pfd mine is rated at 50n, I tried a few on and chose the least bulky, wish I had got one with a pocket tho..

Cheers for the info guys, ive come to a sort of decision, and that is my new kayak will be either a mini X or the scrambler XT. Does anyone have a scrambler XT?

I Have A Perception Freedom Fishin Version And Really Think It Does The Job Well Very Quick Yak Comfy And If You Are Like Me Can Just Fit Fish Finder In Water Bottle Holder So No Drilling Etc

The mini X does look and sound like a great kayak, my only querey is that im well over 6' tall, will i have enough legroom in the mini X?

There seems to be plenty of leg room but I'm no where as tall as you, you are going to have to arrange to get along to a supplier to check it out before you part with your cash.
