Hiya, Any idea what type of beastie this is?? Our local water had lots of them last weekend, and the Rainbows were eating them like no tomorrow...:)

Any idea what fly is used to simulate it..:)

Cheers.

i have just been looking and would agree it is a hawthorn shield bug common in the south of the UK - as for an immitation pattern i could not say i have searched through fly patterns on the net but cannot match it very well due to its shape,

Having a look through all the patterns i would suggest a black bug as this has the body to match the Hawthorn shield bug.

I would trim down a dry green sedge pattern and put some red paint on the wing case and give that a try if you don't have time to tie an imitation beetle pattern.
