View Full Version : Topcat ~ Lossiemouth ~ 21/9/08 - Moray Boat Meet
Ok Lads I've provisionally booked at day with Bill on the Topcat for the 21st Sept. Weather permitting we are going to head a good few miles off shore to area where they scuttle boats, which isn't touched. There are few private boats hitting the area with great results. If the weather isn't good we'll be confined to the inshore reefs.
Boat costs £400 for the day (8hr+) and can take 12 anglers.
Cost will be divided up amongst the number going.

if there is space left sign me up
2 spots left if anyone wants to go.
Thanks for the offer of gear Marty but I think everyone has their own, perhaps anyone needing gear could post up.
I should also add that if we make if off shore we will be in deep water about 150ft + so make sure you are all spooled up with braid.
Does everyone know what rigs to bring....remember daylight dosen't make it down that far. Drop me a PM if you are unsure.
I would love to have filled one of those spots, but I am on a sponsored Mountain Bike ride for Cancer Research on the 21st Sept, dragging my bike and my aged hurting body through Glenfiddich, Glenlivet and Glen Rinnes. I am taking my Brother-in-law (new to seafishing) out on Topcat on Wednesday because I know that he will catch some decent fish! Sound like a good day enjoy!

Hi Johnny...I thought you'd fallen of the face of the earth m8 :D
Get yourself a 300yd spool of braid from ebay...whiplash pro or power pro they are both about 20 quid.
Pirks will work also the jumbo hokkais also bait rigs 4/0 and 5/0 kinda size hooks, glow beads might be useful.
12oz leads make your pirks a 1lb.
1 space left....any takers?
Cant make the trip Bigads, goin to dundee with my son, but I would`nt mind helping Theferg with his trip though glenlivet, glenmorangie, glendronach or glenfidich ( my favourite ) any time he likes, :drunk::drunk::D

Spoke to Bill the skipper and I got the depth of water wrong...its about 90m. He has other marks we can try in the area too that are rough ground.
Meet time will be at 8am on the sunday sailing by 8:30 back in harbour by 6ish.
i'll be comming up the day before not too bad for a b&b
if u want deposite i'll give u mine on 25th

big fella i am on course for two weeks as of friday but i am still up for it mate no worries
Don't bother with deposits guys....I trust you all.
The cost will be £35 that includes a couple quid for a sweep. 400/12 gives me 33.3333333 so it easier to do it that way if we are all in agreement.

Think bigads was saying the jumbo hokkais would work best and size 4/0 and 5/0 bait rigs, hoping to take some cod home.
Yep hokkais will work or just straight baits on bare hooks. Take pirks, i'll be trying shads too. Its hard to say what will deffo work guys so if you have any other ideas try them out. We are hoping to hit a spot few anglers have.
If we get stuck inshore then just your standard reef rigs are fine, like the stuff you'd use at arbroath or scrabby.
Adeys, you will be able to kee fish, infact some might not be able to go back because their bladders are blown.
i got plenty o them and gummi mac's
i'll take some pirks too
cant go wrong with baited muppets. we used to catch box loads of big cod on plain white feathers from ballintore.

no braid or pirks bugger need to sell wife to finance this trip. will see what i can lay my hands on but being away i will find it hard to get shopping. will conventional tackle do ie thirty pound mono and normal hooks do have shads and hokies as well plus a twenty to thirtylb rod.
not been on the boats for fifteen years so tackle geared around shore any advice more than welcomed for this trip please

ive done boat fishing in lots of places and never found a reason to why id change over to braid. ive used both and am not convinced. there are some pluses to braid but its down to personal preference.

Hiya marty,
ive done boat fishing in lots of places and never found a reason to why id change over to braid. ive used both and am not convinced. there are some pluses to braid but its down to personal preference.
Take a 10oz torpedo lead, put it on a rod with nylon and you wont feel it hit the bottom in 90m, nor will you feel most bites.
however take the same lead and use it with braid and not only can you feel the lead touch bottom, but you can feel the lead fall on it's side when you let a bit more line out. When using braid you can even feel a poor cod bite in 400'.
I WAS USING A 6OZ IN ETIVE AND COULD FEEL IT HIT THE BOTTOM NO BOTHER AT ALL DAVY. plus was catching pout, poor cod and gurnard and feeling all there bites. with twenty pound red ice. i think this is a mith put out there to get people to buy braid. im not saying braids not good but nylon aint that bad.

if you were using 6 oz in etive you could have went down to 2 oz with braid , not just all advantages of bite detection etc as has been said before but mixing both braid and mono on a boat is a recipe for lots of tangles , hey but if yer that keen on mono go for it

everybody to their own but braid is the way to go ive fished 500ft with 70lb braid and anither rod with 50lb mono u will see doggy\spur bites on the braid but no the mono

Me and thegooseman lost several skate 1 day when our new 60lb dyneema braid kept snapping(bought from uk hooks)did pull test found it would break as low as 15lb pressure so pay a bit more for top braids like dynon and stren you will save on tackle and get more fish to the boat thats what its all about.

Have used various braids - never had the snapping problem however on charter boats you can get in to tangles or pulled up against the underside of the boat this can cause weaknesses that break under stress
I like powerpro or whiplash - and used to use fireline though it is a bit thicker
Most of my reels now have braid on them
i can see why braid has its advantages especfially in deep water going for skate. but in everyday fishing from a boat im yet to be convinced there is any advantage.

i used to use mono , but after peter gave me loan of his reel at etive in jan the difference is great.
takes a bit of getting used to.

If we were going over the inshore reefs the it wouldn't matter a great deal tbh marty. But we will be drifting an area about 90m/ 270ft deep so avoiding tangles and using as little lead as possible is useful. We might even try anchoring...not 100% sure yet...see what the weather is like and how good the fishing is.
BTW Everyone - We might be able to locate some haddock so take the rigs you'd normally use inshore!
i always chose my lead to the strength of tide. does using braid mean you can use a smaller weight?.

Hi Adam, I`m just back from a week at Finechty campsite, had a great week. I had such a good time I booked a long weekend for 2 weeks time but when I get home I realised it was the same weekend as the topcat trip, so if anyones waiting for a cancellation and wants to take my place your welcome to it. If nobody take up the offer Adam I`ll still go, I`ll just nip up to Lossiemouth for the Sunday.

I have 2 back ups johnny, I'll get back to you.

Aye you can use much less lead due to the diameter, it drags much less in the tide and when the boar drifts. You can feel everything too because it has no stretch. Pull a few yards of mono off your reel and see how much it stretches, braid has no stretch worth mentioning.
i get the stretching bit. can you not just use thin mono. nobodys ever explained this to me so im just curious. there is nothing worse than getting tangled on boats. when fishing in australia all the charter boats wouldnt look at braid and that was in much deeper water. when i asked why they just said mono is better. same when i fished in canada. im quite happy to use either. what thickness of braid is reckomended.
well i've just loaded my slosh 20 with 30lb powerpro and from what i can see its about the same if not less diameter than 15lb red ice

i used those prawns last week up in scrabby and never had a touch. they normally work to but not a touch. the only bait that seem to work was fresh mackie. the lug was getting robbed of the hook.
