Find a local water where they give lessons. It be far better and you will pick it up alot quicker than someone telling you as you can see in motion on what there saying.

That would be my advice too, its very hard to descibe how to cast. You'd be much better spending a few quid and getting a few lessons, that way you can pick the guys brain about all the other thing to know about.....flies, mono, lines this list goes on.

Good luck though its a very enjoyable way to fish.

It's each to there own so ignore negative comments like the one above, there's great sport to be had if fly fishing is your thing! You can buy a few books on the basics but as previously stated, book a couple of 1 hr castintg lessons and ask about basics re flies, retrieval etc. whilst you're having lessons.

Why read the Fly Fishing threads if you really dont like it?

I have only been doing it in the sea for 2-3 years now, whilst I have fished for Trout in England since I was about ten! Learning to cast is great fun, and makes it feel all the better when you hook a fish. You feel you have earned it a lot more. I think one pollack/bass on the fly is worth 5 that I get on the plugs. And the fight is brilliant, so direct. Get started with Mackerel and Snipe, and get ready to get your fingers burnt!

PS Sorry, I have assumed sea fishing there. I learnt to cast at Chew Valley Reservoir near Bristol, through a series of lessons with a qualified instructor. Most established trout fisheries nowadays offer casting tuition, maybe quite pricey, but recommended I think.

I have not cast bait or a lure in almost a year... been fly fishing almost exclusivley, mostly trout and grayling on the river but also done some mullet, bass, pollack etc on the fly too it is a great way to fish, it is a skill that is hard to pick up and use well, thats why you get some folks knocking it... they cant do it... simple as that...

the fight you get on a fly outfit is superb and very hard to beat

the basics take a bit of practice and after your first session/lesson work at the local park on casting or your lawn if you have one and its big enough

the first take, play and hopefully catch you will never forget

remember mine like it was yesterday:fishing::fishing:

My advice would be to watch a few videos and read up first of all. Put what you have seen in practice by having a go with a cheap set up on grass. If you are still struggling to get to grips with the basics then i would consider taking a few lessons. You dont know, it may just come naturally!

I practiced for about 10-12 weeks before i was even happy enough to attempt to hook a fish! After about 7 years of fly fishing i stronlgy recommend it to people i see trout fishing compared to bait and spinning. The thrill you get when a fish grabs is like no other!

I'm yet to try out my 8 weight outfit for mackerel and bass on my dads boat, i'll just have to keep begging him to get the wheel bearing and hub fixed !

Good luck with it and dont give up, you wont regret it!

I will have to read others comments first!

........and once you've got the casting bit sorted you could maybe move on to tying some of your own flies.......and that's a fair old buzz when a fish take's one of your own the first time.

Fly casting is something that can be learned quite quickly or it can be a bit of a struggle. I don't recommend the struggle route - it's just not worth the extra fishing time of frustration and discouragement that goes with it.

Find a proven fly casting instructor - at the beginning!!!! Technique learned well at the start will steer you clear of bad habits that take a while to correct. Cementing bad habits and then going for a lesson is far far less good value because the lesson will be focusing on fixing bad habits rather than moving forwards with your skills.

It's really not that hard, but you can make it hard by not getting instruction early enough.

Saltwater fly fishing

It amuses me no end, when people knock it as mamby pamby, a fruitcakes pursuit, never likely to catch more than a few.

The resort of nutters, pansies and tree huggers

IF you perservere, learn the basics and can cast, you'll have a blast catching fish you wouldn't dream possible in conditions that even the hardened cod fisherman would stay in front of the telly.

It is, or can be, the most skilful and extreme fishing discipline, I love it.

I don't put myself forward as an expert by the way, good friends of mine are and I walk in their wake.

When you catch that first fish doesn't matter if its in salt or freshwater you will be hooked for life .Fly fishing in the salt will give you some great fishing memories and remember anyone can catch a bass on bait but can they catch a bass on a fly .
