Several months ago I corresponded, through PMs, with a forum poster regarding the potential of Croatia. As well as being a great place to take a family holiday the fishing, in big game terms, is cheap.

Well I've just got a report back from one of our German Club members about a recent tournament held there. It follows.

This competition is a three day event – fish two days, a two day break, with Friday the final fishing day. There were 50 boats fishing and, after two days, 49 Bluefin Tuna and one Swordfish had been caught. The biggest Tuna was 305 lbs. For Croatia that’s a pretty good result. Unfortunately the Friday’s fishing had to be cancelled due to bad weather.

Of course after the competition the weather got nice and calm again and during the last week a lot of Tuna are caught and seven Swordfish in daytime on sardine baits whilst drifting, and much more Swordfish lost.

The incredibly story though was that from a small private boat. It hooked and fought a Bluefin for three hours on 80 standup tackle, then the fish died. They succeeded in bringing the fish up during the next hour, but when it was only 5 metres from the boat the line broke! One crew member jumped in the water to get a rope around the tail, but was not possible. At the end they had to watch their tuna sinking! Back in the marina their story was about the lost fish and speculation as to how big it was.

Then the twist in the tale. The next day a ‘bottom dragger’ got this tuna in his net with the circle hook still in his mouth! Its weight was 660lbs.
