over 700 in the tweed but none on the ness???????
lucky if the last week had ten.
tweed was an exception this year. and they wernt grilse which is strange. good size salmon being caught. yes a few other rivers have done well but vertually all rivers up here are almost down by half. i wouldnt call that a good year.

Why do you think there's not been many salmon caught up there? Have you not had the heavy rainfall like the rest of us. It could just be the guys down here are better hunters :bleh:
Steven

lol. Well whats the reason for it ?
Steven
the only thing you can ever learn about salmon fishing is that there numbers fluxuate every year. the ness had a minter two years ago. last year was ok and this year was a disaster. weight and see would be surprised if the tweed did same next year. problem with salmon fishing is there are so many factors which decide it all. the northern rivers like the cassle, oykle, brora these sort of places only had a poor one because they had no rain. the odd days that they had rain they had plenty of fish. the tweed on the other hand is a beast pritty much the best. to put it in context if the final week had 700 fish that is more than the whole river ness caught in the year.

Is there a greater number of anglers on the Tweed than up at Inverness?

tweed is a far longer and wider river. so more people fishing the tweed. but size of river has sod all to do with numbers. as i said theres so many factors. im not going to bore you but for example say all your salmon eggs are due to hatch in one river during one week. now say there has been no rain for a couple of weeks and ground is dry. it rains heavy water runs out of these gastly pine woods up here turns water all acidic and kills all salmon fry. the poor buggers seemed doomed from day one. but they do taste good.

You are so out of touch vespa :nono:
I had 2 decent Salmon from a local river last week and the permit costs less than £20 for the season.
Oh and BTW, it was my first ever crack at freshwater fishing :bleh:

Its still sad that you have to pay to fish. This will be why so many anglers turn to sea fishing. I hated having to hunt down a permit before i could even start fishing. Then it tells you only to take a certain number of fish. Never understood that bit myself. What if ive kept the two or three i want then i land a whopper, do i chuck him back or one of the ones ive kept already :wallbash::wallbash::wallbash: The river i learned to fish on when i was a kid was only fished during competitions by most of its members or when the salmon were running. These clubs charge you to fish it even when they know its not as productive. I wont be back river fishing, i have been put off by all there doo's and don'ts. I bet there is loads of people out there that got chased out of freshwater fishing by rules etc. I cant complain as i love sea fishing now, thanks for opening my eyes to it river authorities

the rules and regulations are there for a very good reason steven. if there wasnt any we would even worse river fishing than we have now. how does getting a permit hold you back?. if you were going for a game of snooker or going to the gym youd have to pay for that. as for being charged when its not productive how you know its not productive if your not fishing. aslong as your out youve got a chance. but must agree that the expense of river fishing makes me do more sea fishing.

Hi Kingfish
Why don't you look up the tweed info line where you will be able to see the most productive beats and the price of a day ticket. You will find that despite the enormous cost you will be unable to get a day on pools such as the junction etc even if you could afford it as its booked by the same people for years in advance.
In fact you could also call the tackle shop in Fort William and ask about getting a day on the better beats of the Lochy whereupon you will be told that it is not possible to get on unless you are willing to pay many thousands and wait many years.
PS How many have you had yourself this season and over how many outings ?
Cheers

Hi minnowbasher,
First and foremost, my passion is SEA fishing. Unfortunately though I don't live near the sea, therefore I have to travel a fair distance to get to a decent mark which takes time and costs money. It's all very well for those who live near the sea and can decide at the spur of the moment to wet a line for an hour or two after work or on a saturday morning etc, but due to my geographical location it's not as convenient for me to do so, therefore I don't get out as often as I would like to.
There is nothing worse than planning a session, sometimes days in advance, sorting the bait, travelling the 100 miles or so, spending 8 hours on a beach and then analysing your days fishing on the way back home when you've had a great big BLANK, which I have my share of. Thankfully though, I do manage to catch enough to keep my enthusiasm going and keep my passion for sea fishing alive.
However, only last week I fished a local river from which I had 2 decent keepers (salmon) which is a mere 5 minute drive from my work, therefore is very convenient for a couple of hours after work or a saturday morning etc and there is always room to fish, yes sometimes it can be busy but you can move up and down the river as you please, and the cost for a permit is £15 for the entire season March - October.
The moral of my story is that you don't need to fork out hundreds of pounds to fish on fancy rivers that have year long waiting lists as you have suggest.
The salmon I bagged last week easily out weigh the cost of my season permit @ £15 whereas a round trip to a decent sea mark can cost the price of a tank of fuel when all I'm likely to catch are under sized or inedible species. So the local rivers are sometimes a little respite for us guys who don't live by the sea.
Having said all that, SEA FISHING is still my No. 1
cheers
Iain
