View Full Version : Charity Fishing Mark Clear Up Day

Posted a threadearly regarding rubbish being discarded at our favourite fishing spots. There have been many posts and mine is no different from what has gone before.

Im going to suggest that all of us genuine shore and rock anglers do something positive to bring this problem up a level and let the general public know that we are responsible sea anglers and that it is a minority that cause such problems.

Lets see if we can get enough interested from all corners of our beautiful country and have a national day where we all get together in the various areas and regions of Scotland on the same day and collect all the rubbish and crap that abounds our shores.

We can have sponsors and do this for a charity and get some national press coverage.

So who is with me on this?

Dont be shy guys and gals. This is our sport and lets make a stance

Im with you 100% if their no going to do it someone has to.

Scotland is a beautiful country with some of the best scenery on the Planet.

having rubbish scattered all over the place is just disgusting and im not just talking about fishing marks.

Go to anywhere scenic Glencoe etc you are sure to find rubbish.

I remember a year ago or so there was a news article about the amount of rubbish on Ben Nevis of all places.

It would be beneficial not just for the environment or the tourist industry but also for the future.

Its a shame that not all people feel the same way but thats there perogative.

So that is a very good shout Mr Thornie and like Ii said am 100% behind you.

Cheers mate Im quite sure that this will gather some momentum and we can make it a success. And hopefully raise some monies for charity along the way. Once we see where we are going with numbers can then decide on areas and marks to be cleaned up

yeah im for that if i can get a day to suit as well, and if theres money going around why not have signs made up saying us genuine anglers will be watching in the future,we could take them with us fishing then put some up bit by bit or just do it en-masse,the litter louts mite think twice if other anglers band together and let them know theres a concerted effort being made to catch and report them, could even put on the signs something like erected by the scottish sea anglers alliance, you know give the effort a name and make it more official :busted_co

and we could maybe even let it be known we will watch out for the to***rs who rip hooks outta the mouths of fish and chuck them back, dead.just think it could even grow to be our own shore policing thing, that would get mega attention, councils would show respect and work with us with the signs idea, maybe even funding.or am i going a bit too far

Stick my name down, i couldn't believe the state of Loch Long when i first fished there last year with my son. You will get loads coming on blaming the boats for the state of our shores, does it really matter who is doing it. As long as its getting cleaned up that's the main thing.

I fished a mark recently, one of those out of the way marks that the general public wouldnt see. The place was an absolute disgrace. Plastic bags, papers, bottles, bait wrappers, rig wrappers and to top it all off 2 (eating size) cod lying around. 1 of the fish was still kicking. (folk had just left before we arrived, maybe 45mins before we got there.) What the **** is that all about. I picked most of it up and put it into their plastic carrier bag and threw the fish back.

Seen the mess with the same baits, rig bags etc etc before at this mark so could be the same folk?

These people shouldnt be allowed to fish let alone access the countryside. I was utterly dismayed at these ******s. There is absolutely no reason for it and certainly no excuse.

All my crap gets put into a plastic bag and sits nicely in my bait bucket.

its a major concern right across the whole country and not an isolated incedent. So if we make a stance and do it publicly and the public can see what we do it may just rub off on a few off the bawheeds that cause it.

As for a warm day to do it pity we didnt live in the bahamas lol

I know that we all do our bit to tidy up as we go along, but a bit of positive publicity will do no harm. It may even make some of the guilty people feel a little ashamed?? (no harm in a little wishful thinking)

how about getting local communities involved too, maybe you could ask the local counciliors to help with things like bin bags, gloves , local vaulenteers, even ask for litter bins to be placed at the more popular marks .

although , i emailed ardchattan community council around a year ago asking for help with the above and never received a reply.

you can add us as well. even the kids will help collect litter as well to show that the young can be responsible as well.

The council etc do litter picks of beaches with the help of a ranger type person might be worth contacting them as well.

we went to thortonlock on sunday and my son who has a bit of a fixation with sand found a mass of line (must of been 2 reels worth) with 8 beach leads and loads of hooks and rigs in it just buried under the sand where the tide doesnt cover. shudder to think if my 3 year old had got the hooks on her hand

this is what stonehaven angling club do every year around may/june incognition with the community council

they clear the beach of all rubbish from the harbour to the cowie caravan park

fishing marks being seasonal (crawton summer mark macky bashers/gourdon winter cod hunters) makes it hard to pick what time of year to do this

Count us in. Maybe worth putting this in the general section as its not just Scotland what needs a tidy up.. Maybe someone could mention it in a pike/carp forum too as the amount of crap they leave is even worse than most sea anglers. A load of signs are easy to make and put up at the worst of places too.

Where do ya stop though? Some of the beaches are so loaded with boat rubbish that you would need a tractor and trailer to clean em up only to find as much again after the next rough sea.

Pretty sure councils would have to provide gloves etc if they had enough people at them and local press involved.

I've thought long and hard about this since it was first posted, and I have mixed thoughts. Mixed thoughts means pros and cons - not all cons.

The idea and the intention is highly commendable. I back the intention to the hilt. However - why should I give up a day of my fishing time because various wallopers cannot clean up after themselves? Two distinct opposing views there with lots to back up for either one I am sure.

A word of caution about an organised clean-up - try to do this under the banner of an existing organisation (such as a community council?) who will already hold third party insurance should someone be unfortunate enough to hurt themselves? This happens annually in Campbeltown. See link here;
http://www.kintyreforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=6762
You will have to issue sharp resistant gloves that conform to CE EN420EN388 (Puncture and abrasion resistance standard) FOC. My company's suppliers do these for 80p per pair.

Another approach - how about signs with the WSF crest on them with a message similar to "Responsible anglers say - Please take all your litter home with you"? Distribute these to all who ask for them, and fix them at known angling litter "hotspots" around Scotland? I'd prefer to spend time doing this than cleaning up after mindless scumbags. If a mark is clean - nobody (joe public) will take any notice. If a small sign is erected, thousands of people will be able to read the message.
Get a WSF sticker on your box or car and you are linked with the sign?

Just an idea - what do others think?

Another approach would be to contact the SFSA office and ask them to send regular reminders (header or footer of every email / letter?) about the litter message to all clubs and members? SFSA are regularly criticised for only catering for match anglers. This would be an ideal way for them to be seen to be interested in all members?

I too dont want to give up a day of my precious time for senseless people who probably wont care about what we do to clean up and will only litter again in the future. This is about giving the genuine sea angler with fishing and decency at heart a good name. And a good name we deserve as 99% of us are just that.

I understand the pros and cons but unfortunatley there is that in everything in life. THhis is our sport and for us to act on it and showwe care about not only our fishing but looking after the environment we fish in will go a long long way to dispelling others beliefs.

Its not a cure and Im sure will never be one. But I hope that it will bring a lot of us together and maybe make an impression on the odd idiot.

Id rather spend a wee day out by the sea, albeit picking others crap up, so we can enjoy access to our various fishing venues. I have had run ins with an odd farmed over the years as to getting to spots and would rather they were on our side. Rather they saw the majority are good decent guys and girls out for a pleasurably days fishing and that it is a minority among us who do the damage.

I think most would agree with this

thornies_back
04-11-2008, 18:10
this is in the early stages of planning so a lot will have to be looked into and good organization to take place taking everythung into account before it can be done . But I agree with Tickety about being careful and yes we shall contact the various organizations that will be of help to us

This is the sign that I made up, am sure a few of the members have seen them, on 9mm ply laminated paper with 5mm flexiglass on the front, will and can make more if anyone on the forum can come up with a better layout wording? it was also bordered with red paint to attract attention!!

Attention All Anglers
This Is A Beautiful Part Of Scotland
It Is Now Being Spoilt!
With All The Garbage Some Of You Are Leaving At These Outstanding Fishing Marks
It Only Takes A Couple Of Minutes To Clear Up All Your Discarded Line, Plastic Bags, Bait & Spinning Wrappers, Beer Cans, Bottles And Anything Else You Take With You!
Don’t Throw It In The Water As Someone Will Have To Pick It Up Wherever It Gets Washed Up!
Its Also A Danger To Farm Animals, Wildlife And Pets
We Will Lose The Prilivage Of Fishing These Marks
So Please Take It Away With You

I think the sign is great but I think in Greenock they would struggle to understand it as it is in English and not in Ned language.
I don't know how long they would last but I am all for giving it a go.
It might also be worth asking local tackle shops to display such signs if there is a shop in the area. I will certainly be speaking to my own local tackle dealer to see if he can help in any way.

What Mark is proposed for clearing? I do my bit and always clear up my own rubbish and any other fishing related rubbish I find on my travels, as do all anglers I fish with. Who are these numpties that have us all running about picking up their tangled lines and bait packets? it really does my head in! One mark I would put forward for consideration is Burntisland Breakwater - The state of this mark is so bad its been in local papers for someone's dog ending up with an old hook in its paw. That said every time I fish their I end up standing in Dog Sh*t atleast once! probably the same dog getting its revenge!

what I want to do is to get fellow anglers from each area of the country and set ourselves into groups. That way we can tackle each area that we fish.

Maybe devide us into around 5 or 6 groups. Each team will clean the marks they know and fish most, with local anglers cleaning there own patch. That way all the popular marks and some lesser known but still messed up marks will get cleaned.

We can collect as much as we can and take pics of our days haul an place the pics on here. I also intend to contact the Sun and Record and the various angling magazines to get some publicity.

If we can do a sponsored clean then each area can decide whats best for the monies, ie a local charity of each areas choice.

thornies_back
16-11-2008, 17:40
so far we have around 30 anglers confirmed and hopefully we will increase numbers as we go along.

I am going to try to arrange a day towards the spring when the weather will be a bit more kind and will also bring on board some anglers who hide the fishing gear away for the winter months.

I have contacted Mike Kernan at the Sun newspaper and Im awaiting his reply. Im going to contact other fishing magazines and the Dailly Record as well as local community groups to get assistance with bags and gloves etc.

Goint to split the country into regions and theses regions will take care and clean there own area. This gives us local knowledge on the ground and will allow us to concentrate on the worst marks more efficiently.

Keep coming with ideas and try get friends and other anglers you know to help

Cheers guys and gals

If the clean-up is taking place and someone is littering at a mark you are cleaning up, what do you do?
Tell them to clean up!!http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/18/18_2_100v.gif (http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb001_ZSYYYYYYMXGB) Wait til they leave then clean up for them!! http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/10/10_1_136.gif (http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb001_ZSYYYYYYMXGB)

Reason I'm asking is some of the idiots i have came across when out fishing would probably tell you to go F**k yourself http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/23/im/fu.gif (http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb001_ZSYYYYYYMXGB)

As we all know there are a few people out there who like to be called fishermen but use fishing as an excuse to go out and get pished, not saying you shouldn't have a beer if you want one but when you see the state of some of these guys.http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/10/10_7_4.gif (http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb001_ZSYYYYYYMXGB) http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/8/8_9_6.gif (http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb001_ZSYYYYYYMXGB)http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/15/15_4_118.gif (http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb001_ZSYYYYYYMXGB)
