Fly for trout on Mouth of River ??

In Scotland can you legally fly fish on a River without Permits?

I have heard various things ..... (This is for scotland)

1) You can fly for Brown trout on any river
2) You can only fly below the high water mark
3) You can only fly for trout if you are not touching the river bed... i.e in a boat...



So could I for example go to the Local River ..... North Esk (near Montrose it is a good Salmon river) and fly fish with out a Permit for trout. Do I have to have certain Fly's or be at a certain time (like 2hr before high water etc ) or a Certain Month?? etc.

Surely all rivers can't all be private?

If I do need a Permit how do I find out where I get one and cost etc? Is there a national permit scheme?

Who police these rivers and how would I prove I am not poaching?

im pritty sure all rivers in scotland are owend by people some private or some owend by the local councils. and if u fished on the esk wich is a good salmon river and the baliff comes by and uve no permit and u say ur fishing for trout im pritty sure he would tell u to get off the water weather u look like a geniune angler fishing for brown trout he still would ask u to get off. go to ur local council and ask them who owns the rights for the river they will tell u and go to local takle shops most of them know and they probably self permits for what u need aswell the normal cost for a permit shoudnt be any more than £10. you would be classed as poaching with out a permit

I am thinking of getting into fly fishing next year, both river and sea, hopefully santa will bring me a fly fishing set up, any ideas on what to start with, bit of a limited budget though.:fishing1:

There is angling club water on the N Esk also.
ie, go join the local angling club and get all the info you need

You can't go wrong with a shakespeare odyssey fly rod 6/7 or 7/8 wt for the price around £25 on ebay and have a look for reels on there aswell cheap and i can put you onto someone for good quality fly line under a tenner. Or see if you're local tackle shop does starter kits argos also do a full starter kit aswell for around £50 - £60 .

hi, if salmon, sea trout are in the water, you must have a permit. no matter if you are only fishing for trout.
