Cheers

paulstewart
24-11-2008, 00:09
Dougy,
this is basically a rock mark, with a walk over narrowish paths. i dont think it would be suitable, but would have been great if you could.

PS

yeah found it easy as i know north Berwick anyway but not fishing marks. there is a carpark at the top of the mark and a path that leads from there to the mark.the area was quiet with just oldies having a walk in the freezing air brrrrr

we are going for a proper look tomorrow as the little un is back at nursery was to cold today to force her to walk it. saw it a the lowest tide today as well.

have lots of lemon, honey and a tot of brandy in hot water seems to help hope it goes soon.

We have a brolly system which is ok for uneven ground i suppose it depends what part of the horse shoe we are fishing.

The is a shop in Berwick upon Tweed that sells rag dont know about lug and but have maccy etc, can put in an order from there and bring them with me roughly £3.95 a box. only one around my area. i also use baits direct whom i ordered with and got me order the following day great service.

local places for bait would prob be Riverside tackle in musselburgh, or mikes tackle shop in portobello. if ur wanting this, best bet would be to phone and order it, otherwide i would try get some before you head through.

karlmc
04-01-2009, 19:36
also the craftye fisherman at inverleith row for rag.. pre order cos it goes fast, and frozen baits and odds and ends, order on tues or wed, it arrives at shop on thurs, and u can pick up when ever... 0131 551 1224

Wont be able to fit everyone on the Horseshoe, even in a dream!...

Unless you know the area, I wouldnt advise heading towards tantallon, as there are a lot of bits that you can get cut off, and the rocks get slippery in the wet. But give it a try if you want!

The beach fishes well given good conditions and should throw up a few flatties and coalies whatever. f the meet is over low as i understand it is ...peeps could fish the skeers on the beach down and up...

If the conditions are anything other than a northerlie or easterlie, and the sea is calm...for Gods sake dont bother lobbing huge cod baits out!
Admit defeat and bring out the two hook clip downs with 15lb snoods and size 2 or 4 hooks...a blow lug tipped with a thin strip of squid or fish..

There are whiting, flounder or dab about, and you could throw up a surprise codling....

We may haveto spread out more than we originaly thought , but ..hey

I would probably go for the beach as well as will have my son flindish with me (10) . and we could get our shelter up :cold: do you have to constantly move back on the beach? and what are you likely to catch there is there still a chance of cod?

paulstewart
11-01-2009, 13:42
it all depends on conditions, if theres a rougfh sea - then theres a chance of a codling or 2. but will prob mostly be whiting or dabs.

To be honest mate, spinning at this time of year is a bit of a waste of time.( Might be proved wrong though lol) Also, you might be best to tie up some ultra light rigs for the daytime as its tough going just now except in darkness. Look for any bits on the beach where there is some wave activity, and concentrate on those areas there are some big flounder around, but they tend to fall at dusk and at night. (I had two last sunday evening...)

Good luck with the day session though, and see you at the meet!

Hi Rattyhorses I'm planning on fishing the beach as well with Flindish(my son) who is 10 and like yourself don't fancy the idea of him climbing over rocks in the dark . we have a small shelter as well and thought if it gets really cold or wet it would be a shorter walk back to warmth of cars heater. lol

Well looking at the pics and we will be there as the tide is on the way out there are 2 channels in the rocks we could fish from and it dosent look as though the tide covers all sand. its near the furthest carpark by the golf club nearer to horse shoe but will see what the land is like when we get there.. pic is here

When you get to road that leads to the harbour carry on round to the right so you are going along the seafront. get to the end of the road and go left along the seafront. at the bottom is the golf club on the right, then the scottish water works set into the hill, then you drive up the hill until you reach the top carpark if you are fishing the Horse shoe or there is a carpark at the bottom if fishing the beach.

I was thinking of parking at bottom of hill if I remember correctly there is a car park there (and fishing the beach)
Do we all meet at a certain point or just get set up and see who turns up around us?

Just heading to the supermarket to get some mussles to try never used them before but worth a try.

yep there is a carpark at the bottom if you are fishing the beach. errrrrrrrrrrrrr not sure whether we are meeting up by the harbour then coming down together or just going to our spots. we will be there early as it will probably take all night to get the bivvy up lol

both can be good, but east beach is the most popular.... between the harbour and horseshoe.
PS
The beach at the west of the harbour can fish for flounder and coalie, but you might look about to find an area that the waves are breaking a bit, even if its just a wee bit. Fish one rod in very close as the tide starts to flood, and one out a good bit further, use a very light lead on your close rod to keep the bait moving. You would be surprised how close in the flounders come...just a few yards, you can often cast way over the top of them.

Worm tipped with fish or a nice thin sliver of squid is my fave.

Size 2 or even 4 hooks with nice long snoods might help too if its calm

Any of the bits of sand along the sea front might fish...the more water movement the better though

Good luck to everyone tomorrow - sorry I cant make it Paul, I'll be up north on Saturday. Just to say that this time last year I caught a couple of Cod from the East Beach, just in front of the Golf Club, casting on the edge of the exposed rocks. They weren't the biggest but hey!

Staying in North Berwick, I can't wait to hear what people catch around the beaches and rocks.
Have fun,

is the horseshoe between canty bay and the castle?

if you head towards the harbour then go to the right as oppose to going into the harbour and follow the road along the seafront, at the end go left and continue to follow the road along the seafront (BIG rock on the beach) as you follow the road you will see the golf club house on the right followed by scottish water garage with a carpark on the left. There will be a road going up to the top carpark. follow this and once up there you will see an information board. follow the little path down to the right and you will see the horse shoe rock there.

Hope this helps

Fished at horsehoe with wadory darren and callum from 5-1.30. Surprised no one was actually fishing there as it did look kinda fishy with a wee swell running in places. Met Paul and Keith who came down shortly after we were set up, thanks for the size four hooks keith they acounted for the dabs at long range as well as the pesty little whiting who were never off the baits. All in we had a total of four dabs, four whiting, a coley and two five bearded rockling. Eventually moved to the harbour to try for a flounder or two in the bay to boost the species count. Wasn't to be and when the sleet started at 3.00am it was time to head for bed. A nice night to be out and about and pity there were no codling around.

Good chatting to the forum members we met and hope you had some success at cockenzie spurgaz. :fishing:

Wee whiting which were a pest and attacked bait of any size.
