im trying to organise a charity conger comp in january......
it will be catch and release as i have a way of doing a prove what you caught scheme or if you wish to keep your fish there will be designated weigh points......
it will be an open match over a 24hour period.....
if you are interested let me know so i can start organising it.....

Interesting, anywhere or all in one place??

was thinking of anywhere.......but if if enough peeps were interested it could be a two leg match, but i think it may be difficult to peg out a conger match....
ideas???
have allready had interest from one tackle shop so i think i will give this a go.....
i have never organised a proper comp before so any help, or advice would be appreciated.....
also i was thinking of a charity that directly applies to fishing????
air ambulance or life boats???
cheers

How does your " prove what you caught scheme " work?
I ran a series of opens at Slapton Beach in south Devon for a year or so, but as they were fixed venue matches they were much easier to organise.
As for prizes for a charity match we ran we simply approached tackle shops and told them what we were doing and asked for some goodies; one even gave us a floatation suit!
In my opinion the best way to run this match would be in the form of a rover with set boundries. So long as the area being fished has enough decent marks for an eel or two, and doesn't involve ropes and sheer cliffs to climb it should work well.
Proving you caught an eel, and the weight, without taking the fish to the weigh-in would involve a lot of trust, but catch and release is always preferable if it's at all possible.
If you run this match I'll definately be up for it; where in the sothwest were you thinking of holding it?

ok this is how i was thinking of doing my proven system...
each entrant on arrival at the signing in area will be issued with a card with a code on, and a transparent sac......they will also have there scales callibrated at the same time....when they weigh their fish a digital photo is to be taken and in that photo the card should be visable as well as the eel in the see through sac and the scales reading......
or you can bring the eel to the weighing venue.....there will be a card reader at the weighing venue as well to download the pics.....that should cut down on people going hame and photoshopping there pics and bringing a print that wont be accepted....
it would be run from st austell to lands end but if i get enough support could be expanded to the taymar......i may try a pilot event first just in the lizard area.....
it does rely on trust and is not completly flawless but in the interests of catch and release it could be an option????

That's great mate but what if you're fishing alone; how do you hold up a sack, full of angry conger, and take a photo at the same time?
I'm not knocking your idea, far from it, I'll just have to take someone with me I guess, to take the pics of my winning eel:1a:

in all honesty should you be fishing rock marks alone in the dead of night? not really the safest thing to do is it

maybe an idea to fish in pairs? we all got a regular fishing buddy or two, safer for a start and like you say, someone to hold your camera while you hold your eel
fishbits

i got to agree pairs would seem a good idea....but i know a lot of people DO fish alone on the rocks.....
Sounds a good idea fishbits,so if myself and a fishing pal went,we could take pics with the weighing scales and a tape measure and post the pics to show what we had caught?????????:unsure::unsure:Not that i would catch anything but i can live in hope!!! LOL

basiically, you would go to the weigh in venue with your digital camera, scales and id card, we would then download your pic and check your scales and verify your entance details.......
its worth a go trying this out and i think that using a tape to measure length will be good aswell......
as long as people dont mind doing all this as opposed to bringing fish back for weighing....there is a trust issue involved and i would hope that people could be honest with there recordings....
i need to get some othe tackle shops on board with this if im to expand the area of the event, as at the mo i only have newtown angling that are ok with it.....
i may try a dry run after christmas to see how it works out......if i do it will just be a no fee no prize comp just for experimental purposes....

Cant see the point in people cheating but like you say it could happen:uhuh:I personally dont mind bringing one eel to be weighed by the judges cos i could do with another in the freezer but in the interest of conservation and other anglers sport i think your piccy/scales checking is a good idea!:clap2: I had a mad idea today regarding a freindly comp, will pm you when ive thought long and hard bout it.:g:

how long could you have a conger eel survive out of water????
peeweefisher
01-12-2008, 10:36
not very long, had one die after just a couple of hours
YES IT WAS EATEN, ALL OF IT
put them in a wet hussan sack they will last a day caught them in the evening then let them go the following evening fine keep them cool as well
fishbits

There is a "quay" up the tamar, where some congers are re-introduced by a local angler lol. Poor things take a bait and then get given a car journey, weighed and released in a new enviroment free of charge lol.
Like you say they seem to last fine out of water as long as they're looked after. The upper reaches of the tamar are gonna be packed full with big conger at this rate lol.

it is a tricky one........i just dont like the idea of people bringing loads of dead eels to weigh in and then dump them somewhere........fair enough if you are going to eat them:yucky: but i dont like the idea of one in the boot of my car!!!!
i think if we can get the see through sac method working it would be the way forward???

well the comp is going to run mid january.....
there will be a trial run for those interested in being guinea pigs beggining of january.....
all im trying to do is give anglers more options in this comp.....if there was a way of doing a comp with catch and release as an option we may find more people having a go???
to be honest i cant see why i would need to think about it too much more, it will either work or it wont.....
i will finalise the dates at the end of the week....
cheers for your comments guys......im still open for opinions.......
