View Full Version : WSF Shore Bass Lure Challenge 2009
mrfishjersey
06-12-2008, 20:37
So it is year two of our bass challenge. This years will be run very simular but this year we are allowing any artificial lure, plugs, spinners, softies, flies, whotever you want. Same rules as last year, the fish are to be measuresed against a tape measure and photo'ed, if possible witnessed by another member or angler but this isn't compulsary. If the leading bass is for instance 50cm you need one of 51cm or more to take the lead ( half cm's don't count ). You can enter the comp by either posting me a cheque or phoning me with your card details whilst I am in my shop. It's a tenner and winner takes all on the first of December, comp runs from the 1st of January 2009 til the 30th of November.
If you catch a bass and don't want it known by everyone that you have caught it ( in case locals know where you are fishing and you are worried they will crowd your mark ) then just PM me the details and all that will be said on the forum is the size, that is until you are confident to let all the information to be released. This is fair enough as some areas in the uk are short on good bass marks and it's only fair if the angler wants to keep it to himself for a few weeks til the heat is over.
Good luck to everyone, last years winner Graham Hill has donated his £200 winnings for a trophy to be put forward, this will be a nice trophy and will be displayed in my shop ( unless the winner is willing to take very good care of it and make sure it is returned safely ), and a replica will be sent for the winner to keep for ever.
To get you going here is last years winner Graham Hill with his plug caught bass of 83cm, 14lb 5oz.

it was 55cm to the middle of the tail,so if i had taken it from the the end of the fin it would have been 56cm 57cm
all i can say is it is nice to be on top of the leader borad for a few days
Hound Dog
03-01-2009, 11:22
It was hard to do it on my own, i will take 53cm as it is only going to last a couple of days anyway, (but i can say i was on the top of the learder board),we are going out sunday again, i think nath will double it.
Bob you were right my tape is much smaller:laugh::laugh::laugh:
im more worried how you were going to cook it , whats it like with dog food stuffing , no wonder your so blo-dy big , with a good coat and shiney hair :laugh::laugh:

The middle one is the Tide Minnow 175 Slim, that you all know and use so well, I know you all love the Orange one but this Pearl Mackerel is a cracker too.
The little beauty at the bottom is a Tide Minnow 90 in Sardine, its a sinking lure and weighs 13g, it does cast like a bullet too for its size, look at the close up pictures here, bootiful...

Just got back from another session. Arrived at low (14:00) with not much tidal movement and no swell. Fished without a touch for an hour and a half using all sorts of lures. With not much happening i decided to move round to where the swell was coming and waves were breaking, again not much happening so decided to clip on the trusty pink/blue Zonk. 3 - 4 casts later and bang! I was in, i knew it was a big fish straight away as it went off on a 30yd run then went right, I was running along the rocks trying to keep up with it, not even able to reel in. The fight lasted for a good 5-6 mins on my very light rod, I saw the fish at my feet I would guess it was around 12-13lb, wondering how the hell i was going to get it up the slope in a heavy swell i decided to let it run until there was a lull. Again it was at my feet so i moved down to the waters edge, grabbed the braid and started to pull it up, when the braid snapped :hammer::wallbash::wallbash::wallbash::wallbash::w allbash:

Varivas Avani Sea Bass Max Power PE 20lb. I bought this and the Varivas Avani Sea Bass Braid 23lb. I put the more expensive PE on my reel and gave GazG the other to test. At first i was pretty impressed it cast very well and sat on the spool nicely. The problem is the diameter - its so thin that any abrasion and it is severely weakened. Not only did it snap (and not at the leader knot) when playing that fish but again just now whilst casting my only other blue/pink Zonk i had found in my spares box! Must have had a weak point from earlier in the day. So if any one is thinking of getting Varvias braid i would recommend the cheaper green stuff as it will take a bit of abuse.
Would have to agree with you there Gee, the bigger ones aren't normally so scrappy, just brute force!

Speaking of the Welsh Double, I was out looking at a spot 5 mins from my house (I was on the way home from work) as it was a big tide, just to check that the rocky gutter was still there and that the entrance and exits were still in the same position.
walked down to my favaroute low water spot only to find an Axle and Wheels washed up about 5 yards out, unfortunatley I didnt have my wellies so it was 5 yards to far to go in and move it. Still I found some nice depressions further along that might yeild a fish or too!

hey bob ,,you are right the condition of these fish for this time of year is just off the scale they would not have been any heavier in october and if its any help to you lads in wales there is a massive run of bass off roslare at the moment and i suspect they are heading your way and there has been reports of doubles all over the shop so a 75cm fish is by no means unbeatable certainly this year

Well at last I have the trophy. Its beautiful, a slab of crystal engraved with small crests around the base. The engraver has kept some small shields for each year and there is a flash of green on them in respect that the first fish (and probably every one to come) was caught in Ireland.
Once again i would like to thank Graham for his gesture of donating this trophy with his winnings. I havnt had the invoice yet but I think there will be enough left over for replicas for the winners for a few years to come.

After lure fishing only a few times the past couple of months i decided to head out this evening as the conditions looked good. Arrived at the spot 3 hours before high, the conditions were great and I had a good feeling.
After 2 1/2 hours of fishing my optimism had disappeared and I was thinking of leaving. One last try with the Zonk and i hit into this beauty:
It was a slender fish and weighed 8lb 14oz
Pic to follow as it is on my mates camera
Measured 78cm:

I noticed the previous fish have all been measured across the body. That adds an extra 1cm. Should i re-measure it across the body and take a pic?
Well done Liam, great fish, should have been a double. You'll have to wait for Mick to confirm on the measuring, although Graham measured across the top he also only seemed to measure to the inside of the curve of the tail.
Still congratulations on a cracking fish.
:victory: brill fish mate 78 cm should been a double for sure ,is it front of nose ,to tip of tail measuring ,or to the fork of the tail ,come on mr fish ,let us know :shutup::laugh:well done , must been great scrap :victory:

27-05-2009, 07:29
Thanks. It was a great scrap as i caught it as far out as i could cast, it then went on a 30yd run straight out to sea with lots of violent head shaking. It went left across the gully and then decided to swim for the shoreline right past me, luckily my mate was waiting with the net:clap3: We both thought it was a double when i picked it up and seen the size of its head. According to the B.A.S.S tape it should have been 12lb
Lovely fish Liam. When they're that big is it the end of the world that they aren't a double?
Which Zonk were you using out of interest? I've noticed lots of reports on here and on the grapevine that those lures attract big fish.
PS Don't get hung up on the BASS tape thing, I don't think its that accurate myself as I only seem to hear of people's fish differing to what it says. I reckon that bass come in lots of different proportions, a bit like people - take a look in MrFish's shop next time you're in!

Its normally the pink/blue that catches. This time it was a different colour (forgotten the name) has a green back with silver underside and a dash on pink near the lip.
Does the comp go on weight and length or just length?
Just length. I'm sure Mick will be on soon to clarify.

Hi Guys .
If Gees bass was 75cm long ,
and Liams bass is 78 cm long . he is the new leader for the shore . :victory:
It all goes on the length, not weight as well

That's exactly why each tape bears the message "Weights are an average and may vary dependent on girth." 1.92m doesn't fit with XL in Aigle either mon vie.
Agreed, no two bass are the same, but the weights/lengths for the "everyday" bass described by the increments on the BASS tape were derived from field measurement of more than 600 fish ~ I should know :whistling
One could go into more detail about morphometrics, but one is feeling a little jaded right now.
In a few years time, all we'll be left with are our photos & memories.

PS Good fish folks.

Well, you guys certainly know how to confuse things.....
If you look at the rules below it states "no half cm's, and if you look at the two pickthe bass are the same length. But, Gees was measured across the fish, so maybe thats why he knocked off a couple of cm's.
Liams bass is 77 and a half by my readings
http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh201/mrfishjersey/Liamsfinished.jpg
And Gees is 77cm by my readings......
http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh201/mrfishjersey/Geesmeasured.jpg
I need to speak to Gee to ask him how he measured it,I will phone him now and get back soon
Liam_Harrison
27-05-2009, 22:24
Need to clear it up as mine was 79 when measured across the fish. Just call it a draw? Someone is bound to get a bigger one in Ireland!

Well Gee aint answering his phone, he is probably in bed! I am personally edging towards Liams fish as Grahams was across the back.... I willspeaktohimtomorrow, my space bar on mylaptopis broken and its doing my head in by the way.
Amendment to the rules
When photographing fish please put the measure under or along side the fish

Well done Liam, I spoke to Graham today and being the gentleman that he always is he straight away agreed his bass was measured across the fish and he had taken off a couple of cm's because of that. So the challenge is being lead in Jersey....come on Guernsey, Alderney and the UK, this proves it doesnt need to be a double figure fish to take the lead. I thought Gee had it sewn up to be honest.
so is 77 cm the one to beat :victory: well done liam :victory:may join in soon , now something worth trying for :laugh::crazy::shutup::laugh::crazy::shutu p::shutup:

Looks pretty similar to the bait fish you posted in the C.I section :victory:
Edit: Having just looked at the pic of the sprat/sardine again, it looks pretty much identical!
Joined this challenge today by parting with £10 to Mick.
Watch out lads the guns is coming for ye all:laugh:
Nice fish Liam, but Mick.......we don't all have nice smooth flat surfaces close to hand when measuring our bass, me, the bass if often strewn over kelp or lying in a shallow rock pool and kinda bent/buckled.....maybe we should endorse the half pipe with a tape stuck in the bottom type of thing that are used in other comps.....although I'm not too pleased with carting this around the rocks :headhurt:
fishing eh!
Got to ask too.....how many pocket tapes do you boys get through due to the rust inside??? haberdashery tape for me darlings :punk:
Get one of the Bass tapes from B.A.S.S, made of tyvec so don't rust and gives you average size for length. You have got to make sure you catch a Bass under 1 meter though.

I'm not in the competition lads, but I thought I might just post this in for the crack....an 82cm bass caught tonight on a Maria Chase BW Holo ( and who said these only catch small fish).

Due to personal circumstances on my part would the organiser of this challenge consider moving the closing date to the 24 december 2009 ,or as a personal favior of putting the brass back into the WSF Trophy last time round

Um, No. I take it by saying personal circumstances you mean the fact that you are going to Ireland the first weekend of Dec and fancy your chances then.....crafty. I am there the last week of November mate, didnt even think of the challange when I booked it either.
We cant be changing the rules this late in the contest, it would be like extending the weigh in times at a plugging meet, it just cant be done.
In case of confusion I have stated some rule amendments made earlier tis year.
It is awkward eh, but I recon its Liam in the lead now, and I am the adjudicator.

mark...
You cant take for granted the scale set out on the BASS tapes ,
I believe they are only a guide.....
I know :offtopic:, my 10lb bass came off the boat , but at 77cm the
tape said this fish was 10lb 4oz ??????? reliable scales said 10lb,,
any body who has had a biggy and only measured the fish could have had a false weight ratio IMHO

Yes it was 8lb 14oz.
Definitely a size 0, I blame fashion magazines and skinny models for denying me a double.

When i got my tapes from John at BASS, his view is that the tapes are generally pretty good up until about 7lb, but thereafter, the girth of the fish can vary so much, that you really need scales.
