Another week long break from work again, so I can get stuck into the brine. 3 of us fished on our local beach last night. The other 2 caught more than their fair share of stingrays. Good to hear groaning and cursing from someone else for a change. The rays were released unharmed (after a 20 min fight each...). The fisherman were none too pleased; 2 were landed, 2 busted off. Hard work for not much reward. Cant even hold them for a photo unless your a bodybuilder who wants a 9 inch piece of serrated bone through yr flesh

I got a new species for me, a shovelnose shark. Very small one of about 7 kg. Took a tiny piece of herring on a tiny hook on 8lb line, placed hopefully to catch more herring for sharkbait. Fish came home for the pot; shovelnose are a bit of a treat, so I am told....

Good stuff Omar, I was in Brest in France recently watching shovel nose sharks swim around, never thought about eating one, was it tasty?

I have to say it was one of the tastiest fish I have eaten in a long while. Simply done with breadcrumbs n fried; tatties n salad. Yum, fit for a king. Very pleasanly surprised.

I have just been corrected also. They are in fact a member of the ray family. If I knew it was a shovelnosed RAY when I caught it, it prob would have put it back.

As to the mulloway Tom; they are always the main target for all of my beach fishing. Alas, they dont often play the game that we would like. A very canny fish indeed. I have been smashed up a few time since getting back from UK by what I am sure were biiiiiig 'croakers'. Some fish don't give a damn about a sporting chance. 25lb mono stands no chance. But if you step upto 40 or 50lb, stand the chance of mulloway not taking the bait at all. What a conundrum........

The quad is going well. Tiz a beast that climbs anything that I point it at 9so far at least). Gets a lot of use. Gotta take care of them though. For a vehicle that will spend its whole life on the beach, dont want it rusting.

Big all nighter planned for tommorrow night. Last night of my break. Fish all night in preparation for a week of night shift......
