Just bought a new reel and was wondering how much backing to chuck on it. Its a wide arbor 6-8 reel, and I have a 7 weight line to go on it. I have a spool of 18lb backing, 100 yards of it. I am thinking about half maybe? Its been a while since I used this delicate stuff!

Best way is to stick the tip of flyline to your reel with a bit of tape, and reel it on.
Take your backing -temporarily stick it onto the flyline with a bit of tape and reel enough on until it reaches about 3mm short of the top, and cut your backing.
Wind off backing (boat multiplier perfect for the job) otherwise hand wind onto a book.
Take off fly line and add your braided loops.
Tie on properly the backing and wind on fly reel.
Tie to your fly line and reel on.
Happy casting.
