Yesterday (18/01/08) we had the George Thornley meet, and during this meet we thought it would be fun if we took on other areas of the forum.
What we (the south east) was thinking was a home and away match against the east coast during the cod spring run.
If there are enough of you interested let us know so we can work the finer points e.g date, venue, rules etc

Hi mate,

I contacted some of the guys i know from the East coast a while back on this subject.

Had some possitive feedback.

Only date not good for many of us up here is the 28th of March as far as i'm aware as we are doing a beach clean over at Orford.

Orford Ness would be my choice of venue up here if everyone agrees.

Where would our away leg be? Preferably nowhere with lots of floating wood lol

To be good to our finned friends how about measure and release, total length for each top 10 fishermen from each area. Winning area gets 10 points. Then largest Cod over 2.5lb , 1 point per whole lb to the winning area.

Firstly thanks for the reply.
You lot (the east coast) know roughly when the spring run is in, so as long as there is some notice then you lot pick the date.
orford would be ok as long as pete is happy to pick up any strugglers as some of our lot would have to come from deepest Kent (looking at a 4 hour journey. Also what if we keep the match just to the Narrows, that makes it easier for the older generation not having to struggle over all that shingle. Finally what about any fish over a certain size, this stops people running along the beach with small whiting, and make more people fish for the bigger fish, oh and 1 rod 2 hooks, if its a big turn out

dependent on dates, im up for it be a good get together i rekon, agree with john stop any silly size fish being measured have a minimum measure to act as a guide line,

Adam, i'm happy to captain if you want, we are all grown lads so more of a coordinator if you want.

I agree Jason, don't want to be running up and down the beach with tiny Whiting every five minutes, it's a fluid situation at the moment so i'm sure we'll get some suggestions.

Narrows i think would be a popular move.

I'll have a look at tides etc.

Any East coasters that want to join in let me know by PM and i'll get a list together.

Looking forward to it already

Just gone through the tide table for Southend, April 11th looks good. Its a 5.8 tide which is above average and Ht is14.35 (probally looking at 13.00) for Orford.

i am free for 11th for Orford, as long as its the narrows, cant manage the walk at the crouch...agree with james on the sizes, no sense in keeping stupid size fish....where / when will the away leg be, any ideas ?

11th April then for the home leg for East coast, Jason when do you want to do your home and where?

I'll contact Peter Merrin to organise boat over etc, narrows seems to be a favourite. i'll publish times when i know more.

Jason, lets get some rules together, over the next week and publish them on here so that everyone is clear.

These are the sugestions that Jason has posted on the south east forum John.

This is my plan for the meet, I have PM Cambs John

My ideas, 1 rod 2 hooks max (unless its a poor turnout then 2 rods 4 hooks).

2 prizes for individuals biggest fish and biggest bag. Either a 50-50 split or a 60-40 (60% biggest fish)

£5 to enter for the pools (thats £5 max) ** The comp is free fishing the pools is optional

All fish over a certain size to count say 40cm** Agreed on 45cm

As for team winners if you have 10 anglers and we have 20 then our 1st, 3rd 5th and so on anglers count, then average per team. ** This is for me to work out whos scores count and those who don't

As for away leg I would be thinking of Gravesend a month later with bass and flounder the main fish.

I have also asked that people with mobility or health issues get the 1st boat over so they have less walking. Also those have travelled the furthest get the 1st boat back as they can get away quicker.
Hope you are all happy with that

sorry can i just add where there is a ** then what is written after that is what we are going by. These are changes that Cambs John wanted.
I would also like the fishermen with health issues and mobility issues to get on the 1st boat to reduce their walk to their spot, and after the match people with the longest distance to travel to get on the 1st boat

Much as i hate to do this i'm going to have to cry off this one. It's been put to me by wifey that i need to be somewhere else that day and you know how insistant wives can be. For a quiet life i'll have to back down.

Okay, just spoken to Pete and the Narrows is pretty booked up while the crouch is empty, so its the crouch we are fishing. The boat will leave at 09.00 and return at 17.45
