View Full Version : Beachy Head area plugging meet - Sussex

Pugs
04-05-2009, 22:39
I'm just getting a feel on those interested in a monthly or bi-monthly summer meet down at the Beachy Head area.

Thinking that each meet should coincide with one of the spring tides but due to the nature of the area and very much being reliant on the Sussex soup scenario (water clarity or lack off) we may have to rely on last minute decisions.

So if your keen to pop along, get fit, enjoy the fishing, meet fellow pluggers, followed by a fine well deserved English breakfast at the cafe, just add your name here.

ill be there as long as it doesnt interrupt my usual twice weekly sessions to the rocky stuff i went last week all week and the water down there was very coloured( white) due to another cliff fall at the base and this bloody weather isnt helping chopping and changing all the time:dry::dry:

Hi Pugs, sounds good. A mate a I where thinking of popping down there this summer and pere noster and I where panning to meet down there some time.

The cliff marks in Kent can be a challenge when it comes to water clarity too, so like you say maybe a planned date with a day before confirmation would work.

arent the kent marks like kingsdownbutts and st margrets at cliff any good for bass i fish there alot in the winter for cod but have never fished them for bass

I haven't fished up there much, but intend to give it a go. I think any rocky mark on the Kent Sussex coast has plenty of potential.

So thats Joe, MMD, Pere Noster?, Samfish is likely too. I guess we'll have to hope that a settled period of weather hits our shores and then give it 7 days to clear out the chalk soup.

MMD, are you referring to Beachy on your 2 weekly trips, just asking as if you are, you will be in a position to know when the sea is clear?

Hi Folks,
I might be interested too. I won't be able to make it every time as my domestic circumstances don't give me all the freedom i need to bass fish at will.
If you let me know the dates and where you are going to meet i can work out nearer the time whether i can make it.
It would be good to meet you all, swap stories, techniques etc.

cheers

i think it will be some time before that little lot clears up,but yes i can let u know as it is a hell of walk for nothing, that said we could all bring a lite beach rod and flick some velvets in the water if it is too coloured.
as you know it can colour-up very locally down there, shame to drive home for nothing.
you can also count my boy in (officerofthelure)he is mad for flingingfluff and for a fourteen year old he is adept on the rockystuff with a plugging rod he beat me last year

I have recently taken up sea fishing and am looking for help and guidance. Have acquired a pretty basic bass rod and would love to put it to good use.

Need advice on spinners/lures/poppers, a cheapish reel, or if somebody has a second hand one they are willing to sell on. Where to go....polite responses please.....basically help please !!!!

Clive - you might want to repost this in the main Salt Fly, Lure and Plugging Fishing section (youll get more response there as this thread was about a meetup)

let us know the rating / make model of your rod & someone will reccomend plugs for the type of ground you intend to fish

see you there

How about the first meet on the bank holiday sunday? (week this sunday?)

We have quite a few who have expressed interest. Last chance for anybody else to come forward.

I'm sure that not everybody will be able to meet the bi monthly meet but it's a decent number to give the area a good go, even better if we all chucked in a tenner each for the 'best Bass' caught on the day.

Just keep an eye on this thread, I can't foresee it being this month(well defo not) and the likelihood is things will pick up over June.

The only thing guys is I'm conscious that some of you may be traveling a hell of a way. The sea state down there for lure fishing is always a bit hit and miss and for those who are traveling I would recommend waiting for a long spell of decent weather.

We may be able to accommodate elsewhere, further down at Birling Gap.

18-05-2009, 16:47
It's too true we are cursed with the 'soup' under the cliffs. It will definitely have to be a case of calling it at relatively short notice.

The conditions will fall good at some point though, they always do. 3 or 4 days of settled conditions, biggish tides and light winds usually do the job. Keep those fingers crossed! 14 people all lined up along the ledges chucking plastic would be quite a sight!

Hi All,

I'm Sussex based, (45 mins from Beachy) but never spun salt water before, (I'm a boat angler really who's done a fair amount of worm drowning over the years at Dungeness, Hastings, Eastbourne pier etc) but I'm keen to try for the excitement of catching a bass on light gear on a lure.
If it's not too late, please put my name on the list for a meet up and hopefully I can learn a thing or two from those who know!
I have family commitments so like some others might not be able to make each trip, but if I get the time I will definately be there.

Right then.

I propose an early first trip down to the head on Saturday 27th June. Low tide @ 09:31, High @15:37. We would want to be parked up by 05:00 at the latest. (would of done this weekend but a bit tight on time). Catch the ebb @ sunrise and fish over low and back up for a couple of hours

Those who are travelling from afar, I would recommend waiting until July/August time but you are more then welcome.

PS

Terrain can be rough on footwear, put on decent boots that won't slip easily. Forecast is ok at the moment here (http://www.netweather.tv/index.cgi?action=uk714day3;page=5;type=free;ct=970 2%7EEastbourne;sess=)

I nipped down there this evening and fished it from low water up for 3 hours. Blanked but did see some Bass ( guessing at 3lb too 4lb ish)close in. There was little too no wind and the sea was like a mill pond and the water was very clear. I didn't have any waders but they would have been a great help and next time I go there I will for sure bring them with me, you don't need them but I found myself walking twice as far as needed too get round the rock pool's. I was surprised I didn't see anyone else fishing and the only people I saw was a couple taking their dog for a walk. They stopped and chatted for a few minutes and were very pleasant. Any way here's a couple of pics for those that have not been there that are going too your meet.

Pugs,
Don't know the way down, but would be happy to turn up earlier. If that makes it easier.

Cheers

Sorry , will not be able to make this one after all. Will be going tomorrow evening though.
I presume you will be heading for Cow Gap which is down the track by the side of the tea chalet where you are parking. Carry on past playing fields until you see path and stairs down to the beach. About 15/20 mins from where you are going to park.

Quick report because I'm knackered...really hard going, thick fog was abound until around 11 AM, chilly wind coming around the head, clear'ish water saw us all plugging are little hearts out.

Team who made it was Tunny, NeverEnough, Samfish, Jaccil, perenoster and me plus one of Jacques buddies. Total return 2 Bass, 1 to Sam and 1 to myself both around the pound - pound and half, Sam's on a shallow diver and mine on a popper!Perenoster lost a Wrasse and Sam lost a small Bass, both underfoot.

Great company and a laugh was had with all the dare devil stunts taking place over treacherous large kelp covered rocks and hidden gullies...LOL

Got a pretty good sunburn! A lot of effort but the decent fish didn't show...

I managed to catch two schoolies on a jointed MirroLure shortly after you left, right where you left. A 3lb fish turned right in front of me, not to be seen again. I then proceeded to lose my 3rd plug of the day, which is more than I've lost in the last 20 sessions... Luckily none of the special ones were lost! I do need to order some shallow divers before my next session.

The water really cleared up at high tide but me and Andy had no follows at all in the area where we normally fish over high tide. Things were so quiet at the time, Andy made the comment that I might as well try catch the plastic bag drifting around. A minute later and I jokingly shout over to him while putting a bend in the rod as I'm pulling the bag. As I pull the bag over the rock in front of me, a bass popped out to inspect and promptly disappeared... I had a lot of follows from schoolies on the ebb (my favourite time for this spot), but in that clear water they were not being fooled.

Well, it was nice to meet all of you guys. I hope the next meet is more successful! I took a pic of the diehards late in the session. The other pic shows the 1-2" sandeel fry that were fairly abundant in the area. Someone find out where the bass were today!

FULL REPORT

Well at last the first WSF Beachy Head meet took place today.

03:15 i woke from a half hearted attempt of what one describes as sleep. Sam would pick me up @04:00 to set off to the prearranged meeting place, all my tackle was prepared, just a case of splashing some water on my face, inaugural coffee and a shake to wake me up. Soon 4 AM came round and as Sam pulled up, I had already grabbed my gear and was rushing to the car. One hour later and we were parked up awaiting the other boys to turn up. Soon James and Mike pulled up and we were soon talking tales of fishy things and comparing tackle(u r missus). Nobody else turned up, so we had to make the decision to crack on and get down to the ‘the ledge’ ASAP.

Forecast for the day was bright, 77 centigrade with a light 4 mph NW wind, err what, they didn’t tell mother nature that. As soon as we had left the car park and trekking along, the wind picked up, the fog rolled in and a decidedly cold chill crept over the cliffs and down on to the foreshore. WTF, sack the weatherman…LOL

Anyway, when we got down, we were greeted to see a further 3 anglers on ‘the ledge’. It transpired that it was Jacque and Dave, who obviously had less kip than me and were keen to get down for first light. With 6 pluggers furiously plugging away and with a variety of techniques and different plugs and patterns, surely we would hit that bar of silver!

Wrong, it was tough going, we were all busy as bees, casting in to gullies, over reefs and in to lagoons, nothing though took. This just looks so ‘Bassy’, where were they?

Wind was really whipping around the head and in the distance the Beachy Head lighthouse could be heard, sounding it’s fog horn for those sea faring folk, a sober and haunting noise echoed down and over the cliffs, especially pungent there and eerie!

By 9 AM, peeps were stopping for a quick bite and hot drink, to warm the old core up then starting up again and happily negotiating the rough and slippery terrain to gain access to the best fishing positions. Jacque even mentioned a quick swim out to some rocks, much to many eye brows being raised and mumbling under breath.

Still the wind blew and the fog was relentless.

Until around 11’ish when it started to lift and we were greeted with a warm sunshine, which lifted our spirits and a renewed enthusiasm swept over us. Around 11:30 and whilst fishing with James over some very dodgy kelp ridden rocks and gullies, I had a take on my Mag Popper. A boil behind signalled a chance, followed by an attack, then another and finally a hook up! I was in but what was it. The way it hit it, I thought GarFish but much to my amazement it was a perfectly conditioned pound to pound and half silver bar. A feisty little creature that fought with much gusto for it’s size. I was chuffed, first Bass of the year on a plug and more to the point on a popper to boot.

We continued fishing that area but was always on the look out for the flood sweeping in behind us, you get stuck out there and it will be a bugger to get back in over that kelp whilst wading and watching out for those ankle breaking crevices.

Nothing else was caught until around 1 PM, whilst fishing a deep ledge, Sam (the cat and multiple Blackbird murderer) shouted out that he was in, only to loose a small Bass underfoot. James trundled over 15 minutes later and said that he too had lost a Wrasse at the critical ‘landing’ stage. Still at least something was about!

We continued to fish until around 3 PM, by which time weed was building up, hopes were fading but Sam announced that he had managed to catch a pound and half Bass, finally breaking his plug virginity for this year. Two souls with their plugging mojo back.

Well with that, Dave, James, Sam and myself made our farewell to Jacque and headed back up that ‘hill’, to a eagerly awaited Hamburger and large coke, each one of us catching the sun somewhat.

At just gone 4 PM we made our farewells and headed home.

A great time was had with some cracking company, I’m sure the next meet will be as good a crack as this one but with a few more fish next time.

Great report and a bit of a marathon sesh!!! I was home about 9.30am!!!! (domestic duties to fulfill) Most of my bassing lure trips are about an hour long, fishing for 3 hours was a marathon for me. Well done for sticking with it and catching a few. (more watching, chatting and exploring than fishing in the end)
Great to meet a few more local anglers and hopefully we can meet up again soon with a few more fish... or beer?!?!!?
Cheers

A bad day's fishing is better than a good day at work. I haven't been out in a while and it caught up with me this week... I need my dose of fresh sea breeze this weekend! Lets hope the wind doesn't pick up.

Where was all this weed you're talking about? I heard it was bad towards the west. How is it on Eastbourne side of the reef?

hi all - just to announce my arrival on this site, I'm the Andy who is normally down at Beachy Head with Jacques

re post on previous page, i can't believe that Jacques has gone and bought some waders, so used to seeing him in his old uniquely ventilated and distinctly unwaterproof pair that i'm not at all sure I'll be able to look upon him as a hardcore basser any longer :D

had a few trips to Beachy Head since that meet up, rarely finding cleanish water. highlight was a 4lb'er late one August evening to a patchinko, watching a similar size fish launch itself out of the water in absolutely spectacular fashion, sadly not attached to my line. oh,and there was a ... ahem.... "glamour shoot" taking place on the beach with rather attractive naked young ladies. truly a red letter day & not another fisher insight!!!!

i fished there last Wednesday - the water clarity was just about OK

weather forecast was for winds to pick up a little since then which would colour the water further. if so, it would then need time to settle

anyone local able to chip in and update us on the winds/water clarity recently please?

egg custard reports that the water at beachy head was gin clear - but that appears to have been from out on a boat?

certainly when i was there on Wednesday the water at the shoreline was a little coloured and deteriorated a touch as the day progressed. the winds have not dropped since so i doubt it has improved close in. hope i'm wrong

as for lures - use a black patchinko!

and good luck to all
