View Full Version : The make of my boat

I have been under the impression that my boat was a Picton, a couple of people reckoned it might have been the "Domino" model. Suprise, suprise, going through e-bay (as one does) in the Power Boats section, 11 down on the first page, & I run smack into "Cleavage" in all but name (& condition)!
So what I have is an Icelander, anybody know where they are from? are they still in business? anybody got any information at all that I can work on? Its always useful to put the right maker & model on any insurance or registration documents.

I will stick my neck out and say that neither of these boats is an Icelander, i think yours is definately a Picton.

Dave dont tell me that, just when I thought I had discovered its origins, you throw a bombshell into the mix! The hull shapes are identical, even down to the shape of the transom, the guy has even boarded up the well which I was thinking of doing!
So what are you saying? do you reckon they are both Pictons? neither are Icelanders, whatever they are, they are almost identical hulls, so the plot merely thickens! thanks anyway, the quest continues!

When I was in school an Icelander was someone from Iceland - could be a clue;)

Hi Blueskip

I used to own a Picton. They are quite similar to Icelander's. The main differece I know of between the two is that Picton's have a smooth hull, where as Icelander's have a simulated clinker hull.

Hope this helps

hi blueskip use to fish and spend a lot of time on a 18ft icelander it had a 2 litre ford inboard with a z drive. although it look something like your craft im pretty sure that yours isnt a icelander ours had a full cabin and that made it look quite differant (but i could be wrong !!)

Picton boats disown it, its definitely not one of theirs, they say its a Hydrosport boat, so I have e-mailed them with a photo, will I ever find the Holy Graile?
Or will Paid4 drive me mad before the quest is over?

Norrie, this is the photo that started this thread, I saw it on e-bay & it looked almost identical to mine, it is an Icelander which has had the cabin cut back I checked with him. It seems that mine is in fact a Hydrosport but they wont accept my e-mailed photo so I cant confirm it.

Hi all,
I have today bought an Icelander 18 with a Ford Diesel inboard to a Zdrive.

I hope the picture is here...

You mention you used to fish from one with a ford inboard ? do you know what turn of speed it got upto as mine needs repropping I am told?

There are a few versions of this craft, the one on e-bay is not neccessarily a cut back as the outbard versions all seem to be "open cabin type" unless converted by the owner? - see the difference with the windows in the cabin for instance, and mine is as built with a cabin back in wood.

Any replies would be welcome,

Cheers, Poppajoe...

Well pappajoe yours looks totally different to the one on e-bay, & mine, he is adamant his is an Icelander that they cut the cabin back on, but the hull looks identical to mine.
Yours looks like a little Lochin or similar, it looks like a little "big un" compared to the other two! the confusion still exists, bloody boats!

Hey don't panic Blueskip - if yours is the same as the e-bay version it IS an Icelander, I was merley pointing out that there are a few version of the model.

I was worried when I bought mine that it was converted from an outboard to an inboard as I had not seen any advertised but could remeber seeing one, but it was not - it is an original I/O version as opposed to the simular outboard built boats.

If you get chance send me a pic or pm it would be good to see another anyway.

By the way if you meet anyone with an I/O version running a diesel please let me
know as I have a few questions for them.

Cheers....

Hey poppajoe you can see my boat on (Anglers Gallery, Members Boats), looks exactly the same as the Icelander on e-bay (which the guy is adamant about), but totally different from yours! so the plot thickens!

Hi Blueskip,

Actually, not that my opinion matters but I would'nt say yours is an Iclander or like the one on e-bay?

Looks more like a picton, but I know you would have been down that rod???

Who cares anyway - I love my boats like you do yours, and everyone else.

It's like babies, we all think our own are the best - hey!

Popajoe took some photo's from the same angle as the e-bay one, & they look too similar not to be related, I will try to put them up, but I think mine might be too big, trying anyway!

I'm going to confuse everybody and ask the same question.......................

What make is my boat? The link to a pic is here.
http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/63782

I've asked the same question several places before, but still await confirmation. Length 18ft6"
Beam 8ft
Smooth hull (not simulated clinker). Square back end - does not taper in.
Topsides look similar to an icelander. Underside similar to a microplus.

Can anybody link me to a pic of another boat the same? I've been watching boats'n'outboards for two years and have never seen another ?

Well stumped there? I would have sworn it was a microplus until I looked at the topsides??? and I've owned 3 of them..could be an early one but it looks too good for that old, one giveaway may be that all the microplus's I've owned have been extremely well laid up and usually too heavy for what I thought was needed?

:uhuh:
Hummmm... the bow looks too sharp to me??

You know it's amazing how many "like" boats there are hey!

Mind you the speed some of them go in and out of business and sell the moulds only to be adapted slightly by someone else it's not supprising.

If I am correct, look at Wilson Flyer, I'm sure the mould shape has had more than a few owners??:g:

Poppajoe you are absolutely correct, when I put the two images side by side the hull of the Icelander is much more "gullwinged" than mine, my hull has a steeper angle & a deeper V, it also only has 6 simulated clinker lines instead of 7, in fact Stevie Wonder could have spotted the difference!
Back to the search, its a Hydrosport! if thats what Dave Picton reckons!

Could well be a Hydrosport - I would not know one if I seen one anyway.

So the search goes on then Blueskip?
